Regional but fatal: Intraperitoneal metastasis in gastric cancer

Abstract: Peritoneal carcinomatosis appears to be the most common pattern of metastasis or recurrence and is associated with poor prognosis in gastric cancer patients. Many efforts have been made to improve the survival in patients with peritoneal metastasis. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy remains a widely accepted strategy in the treatment of peritoneal dissemination. Several phase II-III studies confirmed that the combined cytoreducitve surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy resulted in longe… Show more

“…Gastric cancer, one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide [1], arises from the gastric mucosal epithelium and severely affects patient health and quality of life. There are obvious regional differences in its occurrence, with Japan, Korea, and China being the areas with the highest risk in Asia [1,2]. In particular, gastric cancer is one of the most prominent malignant tumors in China [3].…”

“…It is common that most patients were diagnosed in advanced stage of GC only. And many patients are suffering from the metastatic recurrences even after curative resection [ 3 ]. Although several improvements have been achieved in the surgical treatment of gastric cancer, the overall 5-year survival rate for all diagnosed patients is only 24.5 % in Europe [ 4 ] and 40 %-60 % in Asia [ 5 , 6 ], resulting from high recurrence rate.…”

“…Serozal tutulunumun bir diğer sonucuda tümör hücrelerinin dökülerek peritoneal karsinomatoza öncülük etmesidir (15). Yapılan araştırmalarda mide kanserinin solid organ metastazları ve buna bağlı gelişen mortaliye oranı %40'larda iken daha erken mortalite ile giden peritoneal karsinomatozisin eşlik ettiği durumda ise bu oran %60'lardadır (16,17).…”
