Regional Land Subsidence Analysis in Eastern Beijing Plain by InSAR Time Series and Wavelet Transforms

Abstract: Land subsidence is the disaster phenomenon of environmental geology with regionally surface altitude lowering caused by the natural or man-made factors. Beijing, the capital city of China, has suffered from land subsidence since the 1950s, and extreme groundwater extraction has led to subsidence rates of more than 100 mm/year. In this study, we employ two SAR datasets acquired by Envisat and TerraSAR-X satellites to investigate the surface deformation in Beijing Plain from 2003 to 2013 based on the multi-tempo… Show more

“…(1) Merging the InSAR results in space In this study, we only consider the difference of deformation in point targets, caused by a different selections of reference points [41]. We first acquired the deformation for each SAR image with the IPTA technique.…”

“…2020, 12, 457 3 of 22 reached 4000 km 2 . The areas affected by land subsidence comprise more than 60% of the Beijing Plain and form six land subsidence funnels [40][41][42][43][44].…”

“…BCIA is in an enclave of Chaoyang District and the surroundings of that enclave in suburban Shunyi District, which is 10 km away to the severe subsidence area. Therefore, the wide-scale subsidence in Beijing, investigated in [4,8,37], will definitely have an effect on the subsidence in BCIA. Some driving factors causing the subsidence were analyzed and listed as following and all of them should be taken into account to take measures to slow down the subsidence.…”

“…Beijing, the political center of China with a population of more than 21 million, has suffered from land subsidence since 1935 [1]. Severe subsidence still occurs in eastern Beijing, with a maximum subsidence rate exceeding 10 cm/year [2][3][4]. Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) is located in the Beijing Shunyi District, northeast of downtown, which was involved in the core subsidence area in Beijing.…”

“…Over the past few decades, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has been developed as an effective geodetic surveying technique and used for investigating geophysical phenomena, including seismic deformation [18,19], volcano dynamics [20,21], earthquakes [22,23], landslides [24,25], and other geologic processes. The InSAR technique can also monitor the ground deformation caused by human activities (e.g., mining [26,27], delta sinking [28], and land subsidence [29][30][31][32]). Ground fissure is commonly a secondary environmental geological problem caused by land subsidence [33] and the InSAR technique can provide a new tool for investigating ground fissure activity [34,35].…”
