Regional resilience and global production networks in China: An open political economy perspective

Abstract: The article examines regional resilience in China using the case study of the Xiamen regional economy. The open political economy perspective posited builds on three strands; the structural dimensions related to underpinning drivers and the mobility of capital; the multiscalar nature of the institutions in which firms are embedded and the agency of firms and their cognitive capacities in the (re)constitution of reorganizing production networks. The data comprise in-depth interviews with 20 firms in a cross sec… Show more

“…However, there may also be pollution spillovers (Hao et al, 2021 ). Diversified agglomeration has also been widely recognized as encouraging technological innovation and structural transformation (Hardy et al, 2018 ; Yu et al, 2020 ). To measure this agglomeration, based on different perspectives, scholars have used indicators such as location entropy, the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI) index, and the spatial Gini coefficient to measure industrial agglomeration (Pei et al, 2021 ).…”

“…The first has involved coupling research on the multidimensional resilience of economic and social, ecological, or other systems. Resilience has been gradually introduced into the category of spatial economics, with studies discussing the coupling mechanism of resilience between systems under shocks (Folke et al, 2010 ; Hardy et al, 2018 ; Zhang et al, 2021 ). For example, the differentiation and integrity of resilience in the developed Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Yangtze River Delta have been a focus of attention (Liu et al, 2020 ; Zhang & Feng, 2019 ).…”

“…As mentioned above, the effects of diffusion on the production system created an interdependent network between regional states, expanding the operating system of the final product. Quietly, Beijing created an interconnected production network of component manufacturers in neighboring countries, with final assembly in China (Hardy, Imani, and Zhuang 2018, 63–80). In an integrated way, the dimension of the participants in the system of productive chains and fragmented supplies was established on three fronts, operating simultaneously in different entities.…”
