Registration of 3D fetal neurosonography and MRI

Abstract: Graphical abstractHighlightsA novel method for affine registration of fetal neurosonography and brain MRI proposed.Conversion of fetal MRI into pseudo US image described. All data were successfully aligned using robust block-matching approach.Average of 27 US volumes revealed near-complete anatomy of the fetal brain.

“…A disadvantage of this work is that a polynomial functional relationship is assumed between MR and US intensities, and therefore, an interesting area of future work is to extend this method to the estimation of nonparametric functional relationship. The work of Arbel et al [29], Mercier et al [19], and Kuklisova-Murgasova et al [31] transforms the multimodal registration problem to a unimodal one, and hence enables the use of well-established and computationally efficient uni-modal registration methods. A disadvantage is that the presence of pathology can render US simulation from the MR volume challenging.…”

“…Advances in the development of new minimally invasive strategies are tightly linked to progress in biodesign and bioinstrumentation, which may also drive improvements in other surgical approaches. Promoting transdisciplinary basic and translational research in the field of fetal medicine, including noninvasive prenatal testing and novel imaging approaches, 40,41 will continue to bring together and push forward methodologies and care. • Incorporating educational programs in fetal medicine across multiple disciplines will sustain the comprehensive knowledge base required of this field and simultaneously foster the future of coordinated maternal and fetal care.…”
