Registration of ‘CPCL 97‐2730’ Sugarcane

Abstract: Research to develop ‘CPCL 97‐2730’ (Reg. No. CV‐137, PI 655943) sugarcane (a complex hybrid of Saccharum spp.) was initiated by the United States Sugar Corporation (USSC) and completed cooperatively by the USDA–ARS, the University of Florida, and the Florida Sugar Cane League, Inc. CPCL 97‐2730 was released to growers in Florida in December 2008. CPCL 97‐2730 was selected from a cross of USSC proprietary genotypes CL 75‐0853 × CL 88‐4730 made at Clewiston, FL, in December 1996. The female parent, CL 75‐0853, h… Show more

“…These include Louisiana sugarcane cultivar Ho 95-988 [18], HoCP 96-540 [19], Ho 00-950 [20], HoCP 91-552 [21], and Ho 00-961 [22]. In addition, molecular descriptors were also included in sugarcane cultivar registration articles from the Florida sugarcane breeding program, including CPCL 97-2730 [23], CP 00-1101 [24], CP 88-1165 [25], CP 00-1446 [26], and CP 00-2180 [27]. All the molecular descriptors of newly released Louisiana sugarcane cultivars are produced from SSR DNA marker-based genotyping that are stored in the local molecular identity database.…”

“…This trial was planted at four locations: Hilliard Brothers, Townsite Farm, Lykes Brothers Inc. (26°53.8′ N, 81°8.41′ W), and Pahokee Produce Inc. (26°47.44′ N, 80°25.16′ W). Reference cultivars for the sand Stage 4 trial included ‘CL 88‐4730’, a proprietary cultivar developed by the United States Sugar Corporation, CP 96‐1252, and ‘CPCL 97‐2730’ (Milligan et al., 2009). Data were collected from four plant‐cane, four first‐ratoon, and four second‐ratoon harvests.…”

“…The trials at all locations were 9 m (two plots) wide and 576 m (48 plots) long. Commercial check cultivars (CL 88‐4730, ‘CP 96‐1252’ [Edmé et al., 2005], and ‘CPCL 97‐2730’ [Milligan et al., 2009]) were planted randomly within the trial. For evaluation of yield traits, ST4 trials were assessed across 12 harvests (three crops at four locations) from 2015 to 2018.…”
