Regression analysis of the risk factors for postoperative nosocomial infection in patients with abdominal tumors: experience from a large cancer centre in China

Abstract: Nosocomial infection is a common complication after abdominal oncology surgery. Aimed at finding its independent risk factors for prevention, all the patients who underwent abdominal oncology surgery were summarized from March 1(st), 2010 to March 1(st), 2013 from the oncology surgery department, Beijing Shijitan Hospital. The investigated variances were patients' information including admission number, sex, age, diabetes, diagnosis, length of stay, American society of anesthesiologists (ASA) grade, surgery ti… Show more

“…Epidemiological data supported that HAIs are associated with multiple risk factors and can be prevented [9]. Although patients with cancer are susceptible to infections[10], studies exploring the in uencing factors of HAIs in this high-risk population are limited worldwide [11,12]. Therefore, it is important to identify speci c risk factors in the more susceptible population, which helps to develop targeted preventive measures.…”

“…Considering the high prevalence of HAIs in cancer patients, assessing the burden of HAIs on cancer patients is important for strengthening the management of HAIs in cancer hospitals.Epidemiological data supported that HAIs are associated with multiple risk factors and can be prevented [9]. Although patients with cancer are susceptible to infections[10], studies exploring the in uencing factors of HAIs in this high-risk population are limited worldwide [11,12]. Therefore, it is important to identify speci c risk factors in the more susceptible population, which helps to develop targeted preventive measures.Based on these considerations, we conducted this retrospective study involving inpatients discharged for the rst time from the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, a large regional cancer hospital in Southern China, to identify the risk factors of HAIs and estimate the burden including economic loss and length of hospital stay (LOS) attributed to HAIs overall and that across different speci c infection sites.…”

“…Previous studies have provided evidence that patients with open abdominal surgery are at high risk to contract nosocomial infections, with an incidence rate ranging from 7.3% to 27.20% ( 13 15 ). The incidence of nosocomial infections even exceeded 35% in a cohort of patients over 45 years of age who underwent gastrointestinal surgery ( 16 ).…”

“…The Diagnostic Criteria for SWI: 11 SWI after cardiac surgery can be divided into the superficial SWI (SSWI) and deep SWI (DSWI). 12 SSWI is an infection limited to the skin and subcutaneous tissues without the involvement of the sternum or mediastinum.…”

“…The definition of DSWI: DSWI, also known as mediastinal infection, is defined as infection related to surgical incision and involving muscle and bone, with or without infection in the posterior sternal space. 1,9,10 The Diagnostic Criteria for SWI: 11 SWI after cardiac surgery can be divided into the superficial SWI (SSWI) and deep SWI (DSWI). 12 SSWI is an infection limited to the skin and subcutaneous tissues without the involvement of the sternum or mediastinum.…”
