Regulation of Drosophila melanogaster pro-apoptotic gene hid

Abstract: Key decisions one makes in a lifetime include whether and how often to reproduce, what role to play in the community and, under certain conditions, whether to live or die. Similar decisions are also made at the level of cells: whether to divide, what fate to assume in the multicellular context of metazoan development and, under certain conditions, whether to live or to die. The pro-apoptotic gene hid plays an important role in the execution of cell death in Drosophila. Here, we review the various levels of con… Show more

“…JNK (also known as the stress-activated protein kinase, SAPK) is a principal cell stress response effector 27,28 that could link all three phenotypes. Activated Drosophila JNK (also referred to as basket) is known to induce apoptosis by activating Hid 29 and autophagy by inducing dFoxo. 30,31 Activated JNK also induces the rupture of crystal cells to release phenoloxidases.…”

“…33 While we have yet to assess the abundance and activities of dFoxo and dFos in the Nopp140-depleted larvae, others have shown that Hid induction results from JNK activation via these two transcription factors. 29,39 From the combined evidence, we propose that JNK is a central effector activated in response to perturbations in Drosophila ribosome biogenesis.…”

“…The accumulation of Hid has been shown to be regulated at both the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level depending on the tissue. 34 In PCs, both Hid protein and hid transcripts accumulate specifically in supernumerary PCs destined to die, indicating upregulation of hid transcription and/or stabilization of hid mRNA. It is important to note, however, that detection of hid expression in PCs was not possible in a wildtype context.…”

“…For example, genes like Wrinkled, which plays a role in cell death (Bilak and Su 2009), and sticky, which is involved in cytokinesis (Naim et al 2004), contain SNPs associated with sperm competition in females, but it is not obvious how or whether these genes may affect differential sperm use. Several of the nonneurological genes, such as CG31872 and CG15800, are male-specific genes expressed mainly in the accessory glands or testis, respectively.…”
