Reinforced Universal Adhesive by Ribose Crosslinker: A Novel Strategy in Adhesive Dentistry

Abstract: Enzymatic biodegradation of demineralized collagen fibrils could lead to the reduction of resin–dentin bond strength. Therefore, methods that provide protection to collagen fibrils appear to be a pragmatic solution to improve bond strength. Thus, the study’s aim was to investigate the effect of ribose (RB) on demineralized resin–dentin specimens in a modified universal adhesive. Dentin specimens were obtained, standardized and then bonded in vitro with a commercial multi-mode adhesive modified with 0, 0.5%, 1%… Show more

“…Thus, the hybrid layer is a mixture of dentin, hydroxyapatite, resin monomers and residual solvents; hence, its stability ultimately depends on the resistance of the individual components to the degradation [51]. In general, the more compact and homogeneous the hybrid layer, the more stable resin-dentin bond is created [34,52] (Figure 2b).…”

“…Despite novel technologies and constant developments in polymer chemistry, there is still a lack of information regarding the bonding performance of modern universal adhesive systems [ 1 ]. Currently, these types of adhesive systems represent an advanced choice for dental practitioners, as they can be used in self-etch, etch-and-rinse, or a selective enamel-etching mode [ 2 , 3 ]. However, the bonding efficiency of universal adhesives is still questioned, as the durability and stability of the dentin–adhesive interface are limited, especially when used in etched dentin [ 4 , 5 , 6 ].…”

“…Host collagenolytic enzymes (matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and cysteine cathepsins), also called ‘dentin degradomics’, play a functional role in resin–dentin bond loss both during and after dentin demineralization. Research in this field is being undertaken to suggest new methods for preventing their activity [ 1 , 2 ].…”

“…Furthermore, Raman microspectroscopy has evolved to become a versatile method for the in situ structural characterization of adhesive-dentin interfaces [ 2 , 37 ]. The Raman spectrum can probe the chemical structure and offer a clear “fingerprint” of the molecules present in a sample.…”
