Relation between plasma hormone profiles, symptoms, and response to oestrogen treatment in women approaching the menopause.

Abstract: 983The effect of inaccuracies in assessing gestational age alone in terms of final management may be estimated. With 60°h concordance nearly 2%, of all women may be subjected to amniocentesis when they do not really need it while in 2% the test may be omitted when it is actually required. Even with 90% concordance (unattainable in practice at present) the false-positive and false-negative rates are still over 1°. Expressing this differently, with an amniocentesis rate of 5 0 0-that is, all mothers with serum A… Show more

“…In this connection, the vasomotor-symptoms group may be related to low output of ovarian estrogen which is reported to be closely correlated with vasomotor-symptoms (Chakravarti et al 1979). The neurotic symptoms group is also suggestive of a possible correlation with psychological changes caused by a certain hypogonadal state (Schiff et al 1979) in climacteric women.…”

“…Climacteric symptoms are, thus, so various as to require different therapies, based on the factors involved in their etiologies. However, only fragmental approaches such as those from the viewpoint of endocrinologic (Chakravarti et al 1979), psycho somatic (Polit and Larocco 1980), socio-cultural, and other aspects have been undertaken in order to elucidate the etiology of the symptoms. Such complexity may be a reason why the etiology of climacteric symptoms, as a whole, still remains obscure.…”

“…Cytological assessment of lateral vaginal wall smears provides a more sensitive measure of degree of oestrogenization. A repeatedly elevated plasma follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) level confirms that the woman is oestrogen deficient and that oestrogen replacement may alleviate related symptoms (Chakravarti et al, 1979). However, there is little justification to undertake this investigation in a woman who has not had menstrual periods for over a year and who has symptoms suggestive of oestrogen deficiency.…”

“…Chakravati et al 21 selected 82 patients attending a menopause clinic aged over 45 years who had near-regular cycles.Women were excluded if they had not menstruated in the last 3 months. In view of this and their age, it would be more accurate to consider these women as just at the start of the menopausal transition.…”
