Clinical experience is essential to helping nursing students to achieve and practice professional knowledge and skills. Published reports indicate nursing students often experience incivility during clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate nursing student incivility experience during their clinical rotations and the relationship of these experiences with their critical thinking dispositions. A cross-sectional descriptive correlational study design was utilized. Data were collected from junior (n = 195) and senior (n = 180) students in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program in Seoul, Korea between October 15, 2017 and November 20, 2017 using a self-administered survey. Three instruments were used in the survey: six sociodemographic questions, the 13-item Korean version of Uncivil Behavior in Clinical Nursing Education (K-UBCNE) and the 27-item Yoon Critical Thinking Disposition (YCTD) tool. Data analysis revealed junior students reported significantly more incivility from nurses than the senior students (p = .038) during clinical learning experiences. Among YCTD subscales, the Prudence (p = .007) and Self-Confidence critical thinking (p = .007) scores from the senior nursing students were significantly higher than the junior students’ scores. No significant relationship was found between experience of incivility and critical thinking disposition scores. Based on the study results, nursing educators, staff nurses, and administrators/managers in nursing should identify incivility toward nursing students during clinical practicums and especially toward junior nursing students. Additional investigation of the relationship between critical thinking and experiences of incivility is warranted, including longitudinal investigations and qualitative studies among junior nursing students to understand their personal experience of incivility in the clinical setting. Findings could inform the development of targeted programs to reduce clinical incivility.

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between incivility and burnout experienced of nursing students in clinical practice. Also, we were tested effectiveness of mediating effects of resilience of nursing students on burnout in clinical practice. The research survey was 122 nursing students in the 3, 4 grades of nursing departments at 4 universities in B metropolitan city from June 1 to June 30, 2022. The research data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 21.0 Version according to the purpose of the study analysis was conducted to find out the relationship between each variable, and also to verify the mediating effect of resilience in the relationship between incivility and burnout. For this purpose, multiple regression analysis was performed to verify the mediating effect in three stages and Sobel test. The research results are as follows. First, incivility experienced by nursing students was found to have a significant negative correlation with resilience. Second, a significant negative correlation was found between burnout and resilience. Third, a significant positive correlation was confirmed between incivility and burnout experienced by nursing students. A partial mediating effect of resilience was found between incivility and burnout experienced by nursing students. In summary of the results of this study, in order to reduce the burnout of nursing students, it is necessary to prepare an official reporting system in cooperation with schools and hospitals and active efforts to improve the of incivility in nursing organizations. In addition, burnout can be effectively reduced if resilience is promoted through human relationship capacity building education, regular counseling system, or supportive nursing education system that can be used by nursing students in the clinical practice.

Emotional intelligence and its effects on biomarkers of workplace stress

Workplace stress is an insidious, pervasive, and increasing problem that contributes to psychological, psychosocial, and physiological declines to workers' health. This thesis focuses on the effect of emotional intelligence (EI) as a moderator of workplace stress, measured using biomarkers. EI is beneficial to workers because individuals with higher EI have stronger coping abilities, engender more trust, and perform cognitive tasks with less effort, resulting in greater life satisfaction and wellbeing. For these reasons, I argue that EI reduces workplace stress. However, research on EI and stress has long been hindered by subjective measures of both EI and stress. Physiological evidence that EI or EI training moderates the effects of work stress is lacking, and thus I investigate the relationship between EI, measured by the ability-based MSCEIT (Mayer, Salovey, & Caruso, 2002), and physiological stress, measured using salivary cortisol, in two contexts-in a lab using university students, and in the field with Special Forces military personnel.A common source of workplace stress is incivility. In the two lab studies, I assess the moderating effect of EI on participants who experienced stress during online interactions with supportive or uncivil supervisors (Study 1: N= 328,) and supportive, neutral, or uncivil supervisors (Study 2: N= 350). A 2x2x2 sampling model was developed in which subjects completed a business-like task with support or incivility from an online supervisor. EI and stress were recorded using a Mayer-Salovey-Caruso EI ability test and salivary cortisol.Based on COR theory, I hypothesised that EI associates with reduced stress and increased trust. Participants with high EI had a lower change in cortisol (i.e., less stress) in response to cyber-mediated incivility from supervisors than participants with low EI did. Individuals treated in a supportive, civil manner demonstrated significant reductions in cortisol when supervisors supported them. These results corroborate the proposition that individuals with high EI better moderate stress responses to workplace incivility than low EI individuals do.Using field studies, I tested whether EI training reduces physiological stress and increases cognitive function and behavioural performance in a real-world, extremely physical and emotionally high-risk/high-stress work environment. I expanded investigation to the effectiveness of a tailored EI training program. Research conducted in the Australian Special Forces included two studies (Study 3a: N= 35, Study 3b: N= 43), during which I examined the efficacy of EI training in managing stress during real military training exercises using salivary cortisol and Immunoglobin A (IgA) as objective indicators of stress and burnout in a practice-based, Commando population.
