Relationship between ovarian and placental steroid production during early pregnancy in the marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus)

Abstract: These results suggest that progesterone secretion by the corpus luteum of early pregnancy continues beyond the time when oestrogen secretion has declined. The corpus luteum to placental shift in the marmoset appears to occur at a later stage of pregnancy than it does in the macaque monkey and probably also in man.

“…In contrast to that, the strongest signal for cj17HSD7 mRNA was observed in the CL. It increased relative to ␤-actin mRNA in the CL during the first part of pregnancy before the luteo-placental shift in marmoset monkeys [31]. After that, at Day 98, cj17HSD7 expression was reduced.…”

“…Luteolysis was defined for luteal phases and pregnancies as return of follicularphase levels of urinary EIC within days 2 and 8 following treatment. Given that the placenta assumes the major role of steroid secretion at about day SO (Hodges et al 1983b), luteolysis was unlikely to have been the cause of abortion in the small proportion of cloprostenol treatments performed around and after day 50. For convenience only, therefore, all cloprostenol treatments that resulted in the termination of pregnancy are called luteolytic below.…”

“…Plasma progesterone levels were measured using radioimmunoassay (Diagnostic Product Corporation Pty. Ltd., Los Angeles, California) to monitor the reproductive cycles (Harlow et al, 1984;Hodges et al, 1983) using femoral vein blood samples (0.3 ml) taken initially twice weekly. The marmoset has approximately an 8 day follicular phase and a 20 day luteal phase (Hearn, 1983).…”
