Relationship Between some Growth Parameters, Dry Matter Content and Yield of Some Sweet Potato Genotypes Grown under Rainfed Weathered Ultisols in the Humid Tropics

Abstract: A field study was initiated to generate information on dry matter yield and some biometric parameter effects on yield of seven sweet potato genotypes in weathered ultisols in the humid tropics. The experiment, which was laid out in a randomize complete block design with four replications was conducted at National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria (05°29'N, 07°32'E,122 m asl). Umuspo 1 (31.2 t haG 1), closely followed by TIS 87/0087 (27.45 t haG 1) significantly (p<0.01) gave the highe… Show more

“…The NL is a parameter that determines the photosynthetic efficiency of a plant and consequently its performance on SY. However, it is influenced by several factors including the environment (Talebi et al, 2010;Mbarek et al, 2012;Chandel et al 2014;Mbah and Eke-Okoro, 2015). Furthermore, NP is one of the most important yield parameters that determine the number of seeds per plant.…”

“…Tsegaye et al (2006) and Gedamu et al (2010) also got the root yield significantly negatively correlating with dry matter content of roots. But, Mbah and Eke-Okoro (2015) got a positive and significant correlation between root yield and dry matter content of roots. Root yield was not correlated with root length (in Blitar) and amylum content (in Mojokerto).…”

“…Ambarsari et al (2009), state that in Indonesia sweetpotato ranks fourth after rice, maize, and cassava. Besides carbohydrates, sweetpotatoes are also rich in fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants (Kure et al 2012;Mbah and Eke-Okoro 2015;Rodriguez-Bonilla et al 2014). Orangefleshed sweetpotatoes (OFSP) is one of the most important sources of carbohydrates and vitamins (beta carotene).…”

“…More than 70 high yielding varieties (HYVs) of potato have been released for cultivation in our Plant growth analysis, a collective technique used to quantify the components of growth such as crop growth rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, specific leaf area etc. which regulate the crop yield that is a function of total dry matter production and its effective distribution on to economically important plant parts (Mbah and Eke-Okoro, 2015). These growth parameters allow describing the growth of the plant or plant organ and the relationship between the assimilatory apparatus and dry matter production (Olivera, 2000).…”
