BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic created major shifts around daily life across the globe. The rapid increase in cases throughout the world resulted in lockdown policies that resulted in the closure of schools and businesses, restrictions on movement or population mobilization, and restrictions on international travel. These changes affect the welfare of many communities, including the quality of life among community members. AIM: This cross-sectional study aims to determine the risk factors associated with poor quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Data were collected using an online questionnaire which collected information on demography, psychological responses, and quality of life. A total of 324 participants were recruited. Descriptive and statistical analyses were performed using Chi-square. RESULTS: The findings showed that anxiety is associated with quality of life (p = 0.03) and individuals who experience anxiety are at 2.0 times higher risk of experiencing poor quality of life compared to those who do not experience anxiety. CONCLUSION: Nurses can play a role in managing anxiety by providing education which helps people reframe their perspectives and direct people to information from trusted sources, exercising, or other activities which support well-being.

Background: Declining muscle mass is not always accompanied by declining muscle strength in older adults, challenging the notion that low muscle mass is the sole criterion for diagnosing sarcopenia. Objective: This review aims to find out the relationships between muscle mass and muscle strength with physical performance in older adults. Design: This article was a systematic review using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Data Sources and Methods: We do a systematic search of observational studies that are published between 2013 and August 2023 in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Sage journal, Tripdatabase, Cochrane Library, Embase, and CINAHL. Two reviewers selected and extracted data independently and an association measure was recorded from included studies. Results: The review analyzed 17 observational studies conducted between 2013 and September 2023. The findings suggest that while declining muscle mass is often associated with sarcopenia, it may not always correspond to declining muscle strength in older individuals. The most common method used to measure muscle mass was bioelectrical impedance analysis, while handgrip strength was the predominant measure of muscle strength. Tests such as timed up and go and gait speed were used to assess physical performance. Conclusions: Physical performance in older adults is significantly related to muscle strength, whereas the relationship between muscle mass and physical performance is either weak or negligible. Therefore, when evaluating physical performance in older individuals, focusing on muscle strength is more important than muscle mass alone.

Purpose: This study delves into the experiences of elderly individuals undergoing psychotherapy, evaluating its effects on their quality of life and well-being, and identifying unique challenges and benefits in later life. Theoretical reference: The resilience theory, as explored in this study, highlights a multi-dimensional nature encompassing health, psychology, and social work, emphasizing the importance of examining adversity and outcomes and advocating for interdisciplinary approaches to understand and operationalise resilience across individuals, organizations, and communities. Method: A qualitative approach was utilized to gather deep insights into ten (10) participants’ experiences and the subjective impact of psychotherapy on their lives, highlighting the role of specific interventions in promoting psychological well-being. Results and Conclusion: Findings indicate that psychotherapy significantly enhances older individuals' psychological health, fostering positive self-evaluation, growth, meaningfulness, quality relationships, effective life management, and autonomy. The study further identifies critical challenges in accessing psychotherapy, such as financial, transportation, and mobility barriers. Implications of research: The research emphasizes the necessity for psychotherapeutic interventions that include family and social network support to positively influence older adults' well-being, addressing the identified access challenges. Originality/value: This study contributes unique insights into the psychotherapeutic experiences of the elderly, highlighting its crucial role in enhancing quality of life and addressing specific life stage challenges, thus adding valuable knowledge to geriatric psychotherapy literature.
