“…In line with findings from previous studies conducted among MSM in Tennessee and New York [ 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 ], a high prevalence of substance use (e.g., alcohol, recreational drugs, and tobacco) and condomless anal sex (e.g., CIAS and CRAS) was observed among our study participants recruited in these areas. We also found comparable sexual risk portfolios between participants who never/rarely and mostly/always sought exposure-influenced HIV testing in the study, with those never/rarely seeking exposure-influenced HIV testing showing a higher prevalence in alcohol binging, recreational drug use before sex, and group sex—all established risk factors for HIV acquisition.…”

“…However, extensive data quality checks were implemented including open‐text entry questions (e.g., a simple math word problem), filler questions to help conceal the purpose of the screener (e.g., whether a participant had taken various medications), and a question regarding whether they had been to Antarctica in the past month. These approaches have been used previously with online samples of MSM (Ballard et al, 2019; Gebru, Benvenuti, et al, 2022) and enhance confidence in the resulting data. In addition to self‐report measures, future research may corroborate PrEP prescription and PrEP use in other ways (e.g., blood testing).…”

“…Participants reported whether they had heard of PrEP before the current study on a questionnaire regarding PrEP awareness and related attitudes (Gebru, Benvenuti, et al, 2022). Those who had heard of PrEP also reported on perceived PrEP safety (i.e., “In your opinion, how safe do you think PrEP is?”) on a 5‐point Likert‐type scale, ranging from Not safe to Safe , and on their confidence in PrEP's efficacy (i.e., “How confident are you that taking PrEP every day would reduce the transmission of HIV?” ranging from Not confident to Confident ).…”
