Consistent long‐term estimates of fire emissions are important to understand the changing role of fire in the global carbon cycle and to assess the relative importance of humans and climate in shaping fire regimes. However, there is limited information on fire emissions from before the satellite era. We show that in the Amazon region, including the Arc of Deforestation and Bolivia, visibility observations derived from weather stations could explain 61% of the variability in satellite‐based estimates of bottom‐up fire emissions since 1997 and 42% of the variability in satellite‐based estimates of total column carbon monoxide concentrations since 2001. This enabled us to reconstruct the fire history of this region since 1973 when visibility information became available. Our estimates indicate that until 1987 relatively few fires occurred in this region and that fire emissions increased rapidly over the 1990s. We found that this pattern agreed reasonably well with forest loss data sets, indicating that although natural fires may occur here, deforestation and degradation were the main cause of fires. Compared to fire emissions estimates based on Food and Agricultural Organization's Global Forest and Resources Assessment data, our estimates were substantially lower up to the 1990s, after which they were more in line. These visibility‐based fire emissions data set can help constrain dynamic global vegetation models and atmospheric models with a better representation of the complex fire regime in this region.

Abstract. Consistent forest loss estimates are important to understand the role of forest loss and deforestation in the global carbon cycle, for biodiversity studies, and to estimate the mitigation potential of reducing deforestation. To date, most studies have relied on optical satellite data and new efforts have greatly improved our quantitative knowledge on forest dynamics. However, most of these studies yield results for only a relatively short time period or are limited to certain countries. We have quantified large-scale forest loss over a 21-year period (1990-2010) in the tropical biomes of South America using remotely sensed vegetation optical depth (VOD). This passive microwave satellitebased indicator of vegetation water content and vegetation density has a much coarser spatial resolution than optical data but its temporal resolution is higher and VOD is not impacted by aerosols and cloud cover. We used the merged VOD product of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) observations, and developed a change detection algorithm to quantify spatial and temporal variations in forest loss dynamics. Our results compared reasonably well with the newly developed Landsat-based Global Forest Change (GFC) maps, available for the 2001 onwards period (r 2 = 0.90 when comparing annual countrylevel estimates). This allowed us to convert our identified changes in VOD to forest loss area and compute these from 1990 onwards. We also compared these calibrated results to PRODES (r 2 = 0.60 when comparing annual state-level estimates). We found that South American forest exhibited substantial interannual variability without a clear trend during For a large part, these trends were driven by changes in Brazil, which was responsible for 56 % of the total South American forest loss area over our study period according to our results. One of the key findings of our study is that while forest loss decreased in Brazil after 2005, increases in other countries partly offset this trend suggesting that South American forest loss as a whole decreased much less than that in Brazil.

ResumoO objetivo desta pesquisa foi caracterizar áreas queimadas no Tocantins, no ano de 2014, por meio de análise exploratória e de componentes principais, com uso de imagens de satélite dos meses de julho a outubro. Foram utilizadas bandas captadas por sensores do satélite Landsat-8: infravermelho médio (1,57-1,65 µm), infravermelho próximo (0,85-0,88 µm) e vermelho (0,64-0,67 µm), na composição RGB, com resolução espacial de 30 m. Foi realizado o processamento e interpretação visual das imagens para vetorização das áreas queimadas, que foi cruzada com bases de dados (precipitação média anual, pedologia, temperatura média anual, bacia hidrográfica, declividade, áreas protegidas, uso da terra e limites municipais), disponibilizadas pela Secretaria de Planejamento e Orçamento do Tocantins, e dados territoriais e socioeconômicos dos municípios tocantinenses. Estes últimos foram utilizados na análise de Componentes Principais (CP) que extraiu cinco CP que explicam 81,74% da variância dos dados. Esta análise indicou que a área queimada apresentou maior relação positiva com a área do município, quantidade de focos de calor, área de pastagens naturais e florestas. Pelas análises espaciais, nos locais de maior ocorrência de queimadas (regiões do Jalapão e da Ilha do Bananal), bem como no estado todo, a ocorrência de queimadas não pôde ser considerada aleatória. Foi possível concluir que além das condições ambientais intrínsecas do Cerrado, municípios com maiores áreas queimadas estiveram associados com maior Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) da agropecuária e menor PIB de serviços e indústria e menor número de habitantes. This aim of this research was to characterize the burned areas in the Tocantins, 2014 season, by the exploratory and principal component analysis, with use of satellite images between July and October. They were used the bands of sensors of Landsat-8 satellite: shortwave infrared (1.57-1.65 µm), near infrared (0.85-0.88 µm) and red (0.64-0.67 µm), in the RGB composition, with a spatial resolution of 30 meters. It was conducted the processing and visual interpretation of the images, for the vectorization of the burned area. These data were crossed with seven databases (annual average precipitation, pedology, annual average temperature, watershed, slope, protected area, land use and municipal boundaries), available on Secretaria de Planejamento e Orçamento do Tocantins, and with the territory and socioeconomic data of the Tocantins cities. These last data were used in principal component analysis (PCA) that were extracted five PC (data variance explained was 81.74%).
