Relationships between plasma composition and parotid salivary composition and secretion rates in the potoroine marsupials, Aepyprymnus rufescens and Potorous tridactylus

Abstract: Parotid salivation was investigated in two species of potoroine marsupial, Aepyprymnus rufescens and Potorous tridactylus to ascertain flow rates and composition, the buffer capacity of the saliva with respect to possible dependence of these animals on foregut fermentation, and the similarity of anion excretion patterns to those of the kangaroo parotid.
