Analysis of ITS sequence data showed unexpected complexity for Eupatorium album and £. petaloideum, a closely related species pair from eastern North America that has been considered to form a single species. The two species consistently differed in ITS sequence by seven to eight bp as well as a one bp indel, and detailed analysis revealed little intraspecific variation. The ITS sequences of other samples that had similar but slightly differing morphology and were pollen sterile gave several pattems involving bp or indel polymorphisms that indicated that they were of hybrid derivation. Based on differences in leaf and phyllary shape and glandular trichome distribution it was possible to delimit the individual hybrid combinations from one another and from their progenitor species. Material previously called £. album from the western part of its range is of hybrid origin from E. album and E. lancifoliam, and is described here as Eupatorium sullivaniae. Material from the northeastern part of the range previously called £. album var. subvenosum is a hybrid derivative of £. petaloideum and £. hyssopifolium, elevated here to Eupatorium subvenosum. Samples having the general morphology previously associated with £. album var. vaseyi included hybrid derivatives of the combinations £. petaloideum/ E. sessilifolium, here reinstated as £. vasei/i, and £. petaloideum/E. sessilifolium/E. perfoliatum, here reinstated as E.fernaldii. Other samples gave ITS sequence data consistent with a derivation from £. album/E. hyssopifolium. The species of hybrid derivation have geographic ranges that extend beyond those of the inferred progenitors, in the case of £. subvenosum involving a disjunction of several hundred kilometers, suggesting that there have been considerable differences in species ranges over time.

Generic delimitation in Caryophyllaceae has been challenging and has been informed most recently by use of molecular phylogenetic data. In this study, analysis of 29 samples from the small segregate Mononeuria using nuclear ITS and plastid rps16 data revealed it to be polyphyletic. The type species, (M. patula) and two other species (M. muscorum and M. paludicola) were shown to belong to the Sabulina clade. The remaining species formed a clade that also included the previously monotypic Geocarpon and was sister to a heterogeneous group that included the Hawaiian Schiedea and three other monotypic genera, Honckenya, Wilhelmsia and Triplateia. Although several nomenclatural options are available, we propose to place the species from this clade into a single genus, Geocarpon, which basically follows the most recent treatment after exclusion of Sabulina spp., but with the necessary new genus placements. New combinations are proposed: Sabulina muscorum; Sabulina paludicola; Geocarpon carolinianum; Geocarpon cumberlandensis; Geocarpon glabrum; Geocarpon groendlandicum; Geocarpon nuttallii and Geocarpon uniflorum. Analysis of the sequence data revealed remarkable variability among populations of Sabulina patula (formerly Mononeuria patula), Sabulina paludicola (formerly Mononeuria paludicola) and Geocarpon groenlandicum (formerly Mononeuria groenlandica), suggesting that cryptic species may be present. The data also suggested that broader sampling of Sabulina and Geocarpon could lead to increased understanding of the timing and origins of occupation of calcareous glades and rock outcrop habitats in eastern North America.
