Reliability Evaluation of Distribution Systems under μ Grid-Tied and Islanded μ Grid Modes Using Monte Carlo Simulation

Abstract: Reliability evaluation of distribution networks under grid-tied and islanded µ grid modes is presented. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) algorithm is applied to a modified RBTS Bus 2 distribution network. The network includes three types of distributed energy resources, namely, solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and diesel turbine generator (DTG). These distributed generators contribute to supply part of the load during grid-connected mode, but supply 100% of the load in the islanded µ grid mode. A st… Show more

“…Besides LDC provides important measures of reliability such as the loss of load probability and expected unserved demand [18]. Also, LDC is very often used in power system simulation based on probability where availability of production resources is combined with the load forming equivalent load [1,4,13,16,22]. Analysing load duration curve of equivalent load several power system indices can be derived out such as: loss of load probability (LOLP) and expected energy not supplied (EENS).…”

“…power capacity of each PV plant is 1.5 MW [47][48]. The failure and repair rates for PV plants for this power capacity are 0.1 failure/yr and (1/30) hr, respectively [47][48]. The 200 PV plants are required to construct the proposed PV system as shown in table (3).…”

“…An unsymmetrical two point estimate method (U2PEM) has been implemented to handle the uncertainties of the used variables. Monte Carlo Simulation is proposed in [7] to find the reliability of distributed networks and results satisfy that the penetration of distributed generations improves the reliability of the distribution network. Moreover, the reliability factor is also dependent on the operation time and gets decreased when operated for a very long time [8].…”
