Reliability, Usefulness, and Validity of the 30–15 Intermittent Ice Test in Young Elite Ice Hockey Players

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability, usefulness, and validity of the 30-15 Intermittent Ice Test (30-15(IIT)) in 17 young elite ice hockey players. For the reliability and usefulness study, players performed the 30-15(IIT) 7 days apart. For the validity study, data derived from the first 30-15(IIT) were compared with those obtained from the 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test (30-15(IFT), the running version of this test used as a reference marker for its ability to assess cardiovascular fitne… Show more

“…23 A test was regarded as reliable if it had a CV <5%. 12 In order to determine the sensitivity of each test, the SWC was calculated as 0.2 x between-subject standard deviation and calculated as a percentage of the mean in order to compare with the CV. Sensitivity of each test was classified as follows; good (CV < SWC), OK (CV = SWC) or poor (CV > SWC).…”

“…12 In addition, practitioners need to also determine whether a change is of practical significance. The threshold for a change to be deemed practically significant is based on the concept of Cohen's Effect size and is known as the smallest worthwhile change (SWC).…”

“…It is important to acknowledge that having the best reliability does not mean a variable is the most useful at measuring something valuable, as a number of physiological measures have high reliability but may not be sensitive to measurement tools (23). Despite this a CV <5% was set as the criterion to declare that a variable was reliable as previously reported (6,9). The usefulness of the test was assessed by comparing the SWC with the TE (23).…”

“…Time motion analysis research has pointed out ice hockey as a high speed intermittent invasion game similar to the other games (Buchheit, Lefebvre, Laursen, & Ahmaidi, 2011;Montgomery, 1988). The game is characterised by irregular changes between high and low intensity activities over very short periods of time (up to 10 s) with high-impact body contact.…”
