Remobilized Geochemical Anomalies Related to Deep Gold Zones, Carlin Trend, Nevada

Abstract: A near-vertical fracture set in Miocene Carlin Formation tuffaceous sediments occurs approximately 800 m above a deep Carlin-type gold ore zone of Eocene age at the ren property on the northern Carlin trend, Nevada. the fractures, 0.2 to 2 cm wide, are filled with brown montmorillonite clays and contain a distinctive Carlin-type geochemical assemblage including Au, As, sb, Hg, tl, and s. these young, in situ geochemical anomalies are thought to originate from a paleogeothermal event that may have been seismica… Show more

“…Table A2). Given the lack of any mineralogic evidence for hydrothermal alteration, we interpret the high Tl to result from postmineralization mobilization from surrounding ore. High concentrations of Au, As, Sb, Hg, Tl, and S in clay-filled fractures in middle Miocene sedimentary deposits above the Carlin trend demonstrate this process (Cluer, 2012). A least altered low-SiO2 rhyolite (H09-1) dike from outcrop has plagioclase only weakly (Grant, 1986;Hofstra and Cline, 2000).…”

“…Detailed studies of ore-stage arsenian pyrite show that trace element and sulfur isotope zoning formed from temporally discrete ore fluids fed by separate structures (Barker et al, 2009;Longo et al, 2009;Muntean et al, 2009). Recent research also focused on enlarging the target for Carlin-type gold deposits by looking for zoning patterns surrounding Carlin-type gold deposits, including lithogeochemistry (Patterson and Muntean, 2011) and halos of depleted δ 18 O in carbonate oxygen isotopes (Barker et al, 2013;Hickey et al, 2014a;Vaughan et al, 2016), as well as signatures in transported alluvial and sedimentary cover and groundwater (Muntean and Taufen, 2011;Cluer, 2012). In chapter 2, Muntean (2018) presents a mineral systems approach to exploring for Carlintype gold deposits in Nevada.…”

“…By collecting ore or rock samples, the association can be inferred through the stoichiometry of ore-forming minerals [31][32][33][34][35]. Such investigations on a certain type of mineral deposit have been summarized as exploration geochemical models and have been used in turn to find potential deposits of that type in other areas [31,[36][37][38]. Characteristic zonation of mineralization-related minerals/elements is a widely used tool for locating buried mineralization [39,40].…”
