Removal of 2-Mercaptobenzoxazole from Water as Model of Odorous Mercaptan Compounds by a Heterogenous Photocatalytic Process Using Ag-ZnO Nanocomposite Coated Thin Film on Glass Plate

Abstract: A photocatalytic process was evaluated for the removal of 2-Mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO) in wastewater. More than 90% of the MBO was removed by photocatalytic oxidation at about 3 h of irradiation time using Ag-ZnO nanocomposite thin film catalysts coated on glass by dip-coating. Ag-ZnO nanocomposite thin film was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The initial concentration of MBO was 20 ppm with optimum pH value of about 8.0. This investigation will give a new … Show more

“…Photocatalytic reaction under illumination involves oxidation, in which the MBO is photocatalytically oxidized. Alkylsulfonate (R-SO 3 ) and sulfate (SO 4 2À ) are formed by the photooxidation [5,33]. This indicates that the silver-doped zinc oxide films coated on glass is efficient in mercaptobenzoxazole removal.…”

“…There is a great need of producing cleaner fuels [1] and ultra-low-sulfur fuels used in fuel cell applications [2]. Mercaptans are widely used in industries as rubber vulcanization accelerator or corrosion inhibitor [3][4][5]. Mercaptans are strong contaminant of aquatic systems with enormous impact on human health [6,7].…”

“…They cause foul odors and deteriorate the finished products. In addition, due to their acidity, they are corrosive to metals, which is harmful for storage and usage of oil products [3][4][5][6][7][8]. Therefore, it is necessary to remove them, either by extracting or by transforming them to innocuous disulfides.…”

“…Environmental Protection Agency of United States (EPA) estimates that over 450 tons of mercaptan may be lost annually into the environment with great impact on human health. So removal of organosulfur compounds from aqueous solution has been one of the major investigations in the last decades (Habibi and Sheibani 2012). Among them, the pollution of the environment by 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO) is always of great concern for aquatic organisms.…”

“…MBO is widely used in industries as rubber vulcanization or corrosion inhibitor (Allaouia and Wong-Wah-Chung 2010). Some studies on the environmental behavior and the biodegradation of MBO indicated that in environmental conditions it is very stable and cannot completely mineralized (Allaouia and Wong-WahChung 2010; Habibi and Sheibani 2012). To the best of our knowledge, very few works were reported specifically on the removal of MBO (Antonopoulou et al 2014;Habibi and Sheibani 2010;Parham and Khoshnam 2013).…”
