Removal of lead from aqueous solutions by a poly(acrylic acid)/bentonite nanocomposite

Abstract: We synthesized a novel poly acrylic acid-organobentonite (PAA-Bent) nanocomposite by successive intercalation of cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA) surfactant and polyacrylic acid (PAA) into the bentonite (Bent) interlayer spaces. The surfactant-modified clay (CTABent) and PAA-Bent nanocomposite were characterized by XRD and FT-IR techniques and used for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The XRD results confirmed the intercalation of CTA and PAA into the interlayer spaces of the bentonite increasing the d 001… Show more

“…However, these techniques are mostly characterized by their high cost and difficulty. Recently, the use of clay minerals and their modified forms, such as a high specific surface area and high cation exchange capacity (CEC) with chemical and mechanical stability, has received much attention as an effective sorbent [12,13]. Among aluminosilicate…”

“…The XRD patterns and FTIR evidences of the novel adsorbent confirmed the success of the synthesis [23]. The newly synthesised material was applied for the removal of Pb(II) ions, and a removal efficiency of 99.6% was achieved by the nanocomposite with a ).…”

“…He et al [30] produced a kind of PAA/bentonite composite by in situ polymerization of acrylic acid monomers in bentonite (Bent) interlayer spaces, and successfully utilized the composite to remove lead(II) ions from solutions. In our previous work [31] we also prepared and characterized a new hybrid sorbent by grafting of PAA into the Bent galleries and studied equilibrium parameters of Pb sorption by the prepared sorbent. In the present work, the effects of contact time, initial concentration, and temperature on Pb sorption by the hybrid sorbent were investigated.…”
