Removal of Mg2+, K+, SO4-2Ions from Seawater by Precipitation Method

Abstract: Removal of Mg 2+ , K +, and SO4 -2 ions in seawater has been successfully done by precipitation in a mixing tank method. This study aims to remove the content of magnesium ions (Mg + ), potassium (K + ) and sulfate (SO4 -2 ) in sea water with the addition of chemicals disodium phosphate (1.2 % volume), calcium chloride (2 % volume) and sodium hydroxide (2% volume). Stirring is performed at 100 rpm and the pH solution is adjusted to 9. Disodium phosphate serves to bind magnesium ions and potassium, CaCl2 serves… Show more

“…One of the studies (Farmanbordar et al 2016) shows the maximum removal efficiency of Ca+ and Mg+ ions occurred at 50 and 95% at optimized conditions with the reaction time of 15min and the pH range was noted as 11. Similarly, one of the earlier studies (Pujiastuti et al 2016) shows that the effect of reaction time on the percentage of removal rate of Mg+ ion shows at 20 min with the pH range was above 9 and the removal capacity was observed at 97%. This suggests that Mg2+ is formed homogeneously under certain conditions and that nucleation is rapid.…”

“…In Indonesia, salt is mostly produced traditionally by smallholder farmers, as well as by industrial salt companies. However, in terms of quality, traditional salt production has not met health requirements, and the products have remained below quality, according to the Indonesian National Standard (Standard Nasional Indonesia/SNI) specifications No.140-76 [1].…”

“…Intensive research and development efforts were being used worldwide to develop effective processes to reduce or eliminate toxic metal ions in aqueous solutions using precipitation of several metals such as lead, 19 cadmium 20 and magnesium. 21 Still, they provided that this process was carried out at a pH between 8 and 11. 18,22 Others have used polyamide membranes to remove Cd(II) 23 and Cu(II) 24 cations by reverse osmosis.…”
