Renal cell carcinoma and amyopathic dermatomyositis

Abstract: Amyopathic dermatomyositis (dermatomyositis siné myositis) is a rare disorder with cutaneous lesions identical to those of classic dermatomyositis, but with no clinical evidence of myopathy. Association with malignancy has been suggested in a number of reports. We report the case of a 69-year-old man with a recent diagnosis of amyopathic dermatomyositis, who presented to the urology service with hematuria. Investigations revealed a 5.8-cm renal cell carcinoma and the patient underwent left radical nephrectomy … Show more

“…Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies include conditions such as dermatomyositis, polymyositis, sporadic inclusion body myositis, and immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy [103,104]. These idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, characterized by muscle weakness, pain, and rash, are sometimes associated with an underlying malignancy and are described as paraneoplastic syndromes [105]. Renal tumors have been rarely identified in dermatomyositis and have been published as case reports [103,[105][106][107][108].…”

Renal tumors have been rarely identified in dermatomyositis and have been published as case reports [103,[105][106][107][108]. A brief analysis of these reports (five cases) highlighted: an average age over 60 years, a male-to-female ratio of 2:3, the presence of urinary symptoms in only one case, a diagnosis of a paraneoplastic condition that preceded detection of advanced-stage RCC, vulnerability to infections caused by immunosuppressive therapy applied, and abnormalities in serum muscle enzymes (creatine kinase, aldolase) [103,[105][106][107][108].…”
