Renal effects of general anesthesia from old to recent studies

Abstract: Various types of anesthesia are being utilized to maintain physiologically secured surgical conditions. Nearly all categories of general anesthesia are characterized by various perioperative and postoperative complications. These shortcomings are important aspects that need to be considered by the anesthesiologist and surgeon before administration of these compounds. The renal effects of anesthesia play an important role in understanding possible systemic changes due to the fact that the kidney has a direct or… Show more

“…For cesarean section anesthesia, subarachnoid or epidural injection of local anesthetics such as bupivacaine or ropivacaine or opioids is often the option of choice [ 5 ]. On this basis, adjuvant systemic sedative drugs may help to improve the effect of anesthesia and reduce the occurrence of adverse reactions [ 26 ]. Dexmedetomidine is an auxiliary sedative commonly used in clinical practice and is also widely used in cesarean section anesthesia.…”

“…Symptomatic hypocalcemia is usually seen 24–48 hours after the surgery. In order to prevent hypocalcemia, prolonged hospitalization and further complications, calcium and vitamin D are usually given as supplements preoperatively or postoperatively [ 14 ]. In order to avoid the excessive intake of these supplements, prediction of factors that can lead to hypocalcemia is significant [ 15 ].…”

“…4,5 The kidney and aldosterone, parathyroid hormone, antidiuretic hormone, and other factors such as physiological stress play important roles in electrolyte balance and regulating fluid in the body. 6,7 Disturbances in electrolytes are measurable by biochemical parameters in the bloodstream that determines the clinical manifestations of interactions between metabolic events such as hormones, 8,9 medications, 10 renal physiology, 11,12 sepsis, 13 hydration deficiencies, 14 and vascular events. 15 Most common electrolyte imbalances are hypo-and hyper-states of potassium, magnesium, sodium, and calcium.…”
