Renal Failure due to Bardet-Biedl Syndrome

Abstract: Objective: To describe a case of Bardet-Biedl syndrome involving renal failure and retinal dystrophy. Case Presentation and Intervention: A 50-year-old female patient presented to the emergency service with uremic symptoms and metabolic acidosis. Polydactyly, retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, strabismus, nistagmus and renal failure were found. Because she had end-stage renal failure, hemodialysis therapy was started. She has been well for 18 months, without any complication on hemodialysis. Conclusion: Bardet-Bie… Show more

“…If polyuria is absent or has been overlooked, the first renal manifestation may be chronic or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) [24,36,50,51,[54][55][56][57][58][59][60] that occurs at various ages from birth. According to O'Dea et al, 25% of BBS patients have chronic renal failure by age 48 and 10% develop ESRD in childhood or adolescence [51].…”

“…As curative treatment is not available, premature death may occur -most frequently associated with polycystic kidney disease and complications from obesity (type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia) (30,32,33). Given the accepted genetic basis of BBS, treatment has been directed towards symptomatic management (34)(35)(36)(37)(38). In children, manifestations can be challenging for caregivers as patients often exhibit behavioural disorders and visual compromise, as was found in the following case.…”
