Renal Metastasis From Osteogenic Sarcoma

Abstract: Renal metastases of osteogenic sarcoma are unusual clinical occurrence and cases of osteogenic sarcoma treated by nephrectomy for renal metastases have been rarely reported. We report a 19-year-old male who was successfully treated by left nephrectomy for a metastatic tumor of osteogenic sarcoma from the right femur. In 1989 above-knee amputation was performed and the initial relapse with right pulmonary metastasis was treated by right upper lobectomy in 1991. In February 1992 he developed left renal and left … Show more

“…A few cases of gastrointestinal, renal, and pancreatic metastases have also been previously reported. 5,6 The adrenal gland is a relatively common site of metastasis, especially for malignant epithelial tumors. 4 Metastatic adrenal masses are found in 27% of patients with malignant epithelial tumors during autopsy.…”

“…Bone scans are highly sensitive and specific, but not satisfactory for accurate localization of intra‐abdominal lesions. As more and more rare sites of extrapulmonary metastases are reported, 6–17 we believe that CT abdomen will be performed more often for localization of lesions for patients with positive bone scans, with this interesting lace‐like enhancement pattern being demonstrating more readily.…”

“…A review of the literature from 1985 to 1999 gives 12 reported cases of intra‐abdominal metastasis from osteosarcoma. These include metastasis to the liver, 6 pancreas, 7 kidneys, 8–10 stomach, 11 adrenal gland, 12 mesentery, 13 peritoneum, 14 retroperitoneum, 15 pelvic cavity, 16 and even intra‐abdominal metastases causing intestinal obstruction 17 . Other sites of metastases include the brain, 18 heart 19 and regional lymph nodes 20…”

“…Sites of extrapulmonary metastases in order of frequency were bone in 14, epidural in three, brain in two and soft tissue, liver, mediastinal, diaphragmatic involvement in one patient each. Other rare extrapulmonary sites of metastases in osteosarcoma are larynx, (Shimizu et al, 1994); kidney, (Kajikawa et al, 1993); heart, (Dalai et al, 1978;James et al, 1993); adrenal gland, (Potepan et al, 1992), and eyelid (Newman and Diloreto, 1987).…”
