Renewable silver amalgam film electrodes in electrochemical stripping analysis—a review

Abstract: The success of a voltammetric sensing procedure depends mainly on the proper choice of the working electrode. This is because its ability to accumulate the analyte determines the sensitivity of the method. The main criterion of the selection of the proper working electrode is the available potential window. A variety of conductive materials have been used for the preparation of working electrodes. Of these, two kinds of mercury electrodes-hanging mercury drop and film-were used because of their excellent volta… Show more

“…Because of a concern on the environment the widespreadly utilized hanging mercury drop and mercury film electrodes were replaced by gold , modified carbon paste or other carbon materials electrodes , electrodes modified with metals more eco‐friendly than mercury on various substrates and array of iridium microdisks for determination of copper traces. In view of the fact that preparation of chemically modified electrodes is usually time‐consuming process, simple electrochemical modification of various substrates with metal films seems to be a convenient alternative.…”

“…Square‐wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) is one of the most applicable techniques for such monitoring. In combination with SWASV, several different electrodes can be used for trace heavy metal detection . Stripping voltammetry in combination with mercury electrodes has superior analytical performance, but due to the problems associated with mercury waste, other alternatives that are less toxic and have comparative performance regarding trace heavy metal analysis are currently being sought.…”
