Repeatability and reproducibility of measurements of low dissolved radiocesium concentrations in freshwater using different pre-concentration methods

Abstract: We assessed the repeatability and reproducibility of methods for determining low dissolved radiocesium concentrations in freshwater in Fukushima. Twenty-one laboratories pre-concentrated three of 10 L samples by five different pre-concentration methods (Prussian-blue-impregnated filter cartridges, coprecipitation with ammonium phosphomolybdate, evaporation, solid-phase extraction disks, and ion-exchange resin columns), and activity of radiocesium was measured. The z-scores for all of the 137 Cs results were wi… Show more

“…During the experiment, the relative standard deviation (RSD) was used to obtain repeatability and reproducibility as described in the literature [27]. The reproducibility (showing variability between the results from different laboratories) was assessed in a similar way as previously reported [27]. The detection limits were 0.2 mg/kg for Cd, Cr, and Pb, 0.05 mg/ kg for As, and 0.02 mg/kg for Hg.…”

“…The contamination by CsMPs would cause the variability of 137 Cs concentrations in sediment. 13 Since the size of the CsMPs is more than 1 μm, 34,35 care must be taken to avoid contamination by CsMPs in the particulate fraction.…”

“…Considering that the activity concentration of total 137 Cs in lake water was less than 20 mBq/L on average, accidental contamination by CsMPs in the water sample resulted in the intense activity of 137 Cs. The contamination by CsMPs would cause the variability of 137 Cs concentrations in sediment . Since the size of the CsMPs is more than 1 μm, , care must be taken to avoid contamination by CsMPs in the particulate fraction.…”
