Reproduction of pigs in the hills of eastern Nepal

Abstract: A survey of 101 farmers with sows was conducted in the Koshi Hills of Nepal. Estimates of those reproductive traits which did not differ significantly between local and Pakhribas crossbred sows, are farrowing interval 7.4 months, litter size at birth 8.3, age of piglets at weaning 2.2 months and total number of farrowings 13.2. Local pigs reach sexual maturity sooner than Pakhribas crossbreds; age at first farrowing for the two genotypes is 10.7 and 12.0 months (P < 0.05), and age at first mating of boars is 6… Show more

“…This scenario has led to a situation where the majority of the farmers lack proper pig husbandry skills witnessed in the current study. The delayed weaning reported in this study has also been reported in smallholder farms in Nepal (Gatenby and Chemjong 1992) and the Solomon Islands (de Fredrick and Osborne 1977). Weaning of piglets at an earlier age will require provision of high-quality feeds for piglets, which may be lacking in free-range systems (Taveros and More 2001).…”

“…Marketing constraints were common amongst the farmers and mainly included poor prices and inadequate market information. Marketing as constraint in smallholder pig farming has also been reported in several studies (Gatenby and Chemjong 1992;More et al 1999;Wabacha 2001). It is recommended that smallholder farmers form cooperative groups, which would allow them to bargain for better feed and pig prices and in seeking for other markets.…”

“…These two pig breeds are the main indigenous pig breeds used in the present study representing more than 50% of the pig population evaluated. A comparable litter sizes have been recorded by some other unimproved breeds in the region and elsewhere, for example, native pigs of the hilltribes in Thailand with 7.1 piglets born per litter (Falvey, 1981), native pigs in Nepal with 7.9 piglets born per litter (Gatenby and Chemjong, 1992), and Mukota pigs in Zimbabwe with 7.3 piglets born per litter in an on-station trial (Ncube et al, 2003). Further, those studies done on Ban and MongCai pigs (Thuy, 1999(Thuy, , 2001) reported 1 litter/ year and 1.5 -2.1 litters/year for Ban and MongCai pigs, respectively.…”

“…A high quality genetic of sow will produce in average higher number of piglets and post weaned individual pigs after that. Despite the fact that, Iyai (2008) finding was quite low of produced piglet and weaned piglets in Manokwari compared to Nepal (Gatenby and Chemjong, 1992), Vietnam (Lemke et al, 2008;Peters et al, 2006), India (Deka et al, 2007), Thailand (Nakai, 2008) and Philippines .…”

“…Sow and weaned piglet associate with boars (Gatenby and Chemjong, 1992) and therefore producing high number of litter size become important. A high quality of boars will as well determining pig production productivity in Manokwari.…”
