17The eastern Pacific jumbo squid Dosidicus gigas is one of the largest and most abundant 18 squid of the world ocean. To reveal possible interannual variability in the life span, statoliths 19were aged from mature females belonging to two modal size groups (<490 cm and >500 mm of 20 mantle length) collected before (1991-1996), during (1997-1998) and after (1999-2011) strong 21El Niño event in Peruvian waters. We have demonstrated that water temperatures encountered 22 between 3 rd and 6 th months of ontogenesis had the strongest negative effect on age. Together 23 with weaker but significant negative effect coming from temperatures encountered during early 24 life (1 st -3 rd months) and later ontogenesis (7 th and 8 th months), these temperature parameters 25 (together with other environmental factors) were important to determine whether a given animal 26 has a 1 year life cycle (matures early and attains small sizes), or 1.5-2 year life cycle (delayed 27 maturation and large size). Possible cause of a sudden increase in abundance of the large group 28 of D. gigas in 2000-2001 is discussed. 29 30
