Reproductive Outcomes in Lesbian Couples Undergoing Reception of Oocytes from Partner Versus Autologous In Vitro Fertilization/Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

Abstract: Purpose: This study aimed to compare reproductive outcomes after Reception of Oocytes from Partner (ROPA; also called reciprocal in vitro fertilization) with those after in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) with autologous oocytes, in lesbian couples. Methods: This was a retrospective matched cohort study of couples performing a first cycle of either ROPA (n = 60) or autologous IVF/ICSI (n = 120) between February 2012 and May 2018. Couples were matched 1:2 by age of the oocyte pro… Show more

“…these differences were also observed when multivariate analysis considering age, BMI, and number of MII was performed. 48 The most recent quantitative study was also a cohort study comparing young patients without fertility disorders undergoing single-way IVF and ROPA. They included 99 ROPA cycles (73 couples), and 2929 IVF cycles with autologous oocytes (2334 patients) were included.…”

“…These results are in line with previous studies that report better outcomes after reproductive treatments in female couples compared with heterosexual couples. 5,16,17 Concerning the ROPA method, 21% of the LBs resulted from this double-parented method. This means that four in five children were biologically related only to one of their mothers (as a result of single-parented methods).…”

“…Since its introduction in the field of medical-assisted procreation techniques toward 2010, Reciprocal IVF has been considered a method with many potentials, capable of ensuring good rates of successful pregnancy and increasing the participation of couples such as lesbian couples in the IVF treatment. 16 In fact, by using Reciprocal IVF both the persons of a couple can have a biological relatedness to the offspring: one genetically, by providing her eggs (genetic parenthood), and the other one gestationally, by carrying the future baby in her body (gestational parenthood). Considering, then, a lesbian couple, thanks to Reciprocal IVF two women can be both the biological mothers of the same child, being one the “genetic mother” and the other one the “gestational mother,” and it could therefore be said that they “share” (biological) motherhood.…”
