Research about inclusive education: Are the scope, reach and limits empirical and methodological and/or conceptual and evaluative?

Abstract: This paper argues for a broader conception about research into inclusive education, one that extends beyond a focus on empirical factors associated with inclusive education and the effects of inclusive education. It starts with a recent summary of international research into the effects of inclusive education on students with SEN/disabilities and those without. On the basis of this review, it examines a model showing the complexity of factors involved in asking questions about the effects of inclusive educatio… Show more

“…PSTs often feel lost and receive impractical recommendations that contradicts a broad understanding of inclusion. We argued that an adequate approach to initial science teacher education must be based on inclusive values that have to be conveyed as a basis (Norwich, 2022), and we drew on the value-based approach of Florian (2021) here. We identified barriers and boosters toward inclusion in initial science teacher education.…”

“…This study has involved quantitative desktop analysis of the relationship between different variables, in particular the use of specialist provision, to explore the impact on the allocation of the HNB of the NFF. However, a major limitation to this research is that it focuses on the ‘thin’ concepts of inclusion (as setting placement or in general terms) rather than its normative and value basis, which reflects the ‘thick’ concept of inclusion (Norwich, 2022). It is particularly important to acknowledge the importance of LA policies regarding inclusion.…”

“…The political agendas of many countries promote reforms aimed at developing more inclusive education systems (Azorin & Ainscow, 2020). There has been much debate over the years about the meaning, value and funding of inclusion (e.g., Banks et al., 2023; Gordon‐Gould & Hornby, 2023; Gray, 2010; Lindsay, 2011; Norwich, 2022). The present government's SEND and AP Improvement Plan (Gov.…”
