Research and education in analytical chemistry — industrial and academic perspectives from a survey conducted in Sweden

Abstract: Information about the survey and the participantsThe process of the surveys is illustrated in Fig. 1. The response rate of the first survey was 120 out of 360, i.e. 33%, and it was targeting members of the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Swedish Chemical Society. The follow-up survey was sent to the same group and had a response rate of 50 out of 360, i.e. 14%, while survey 3 targeted chemists in all other divisions of the Swedish Chemical Society. Here the response rate was merely 121 out of ca. 2000, i.e… Show more

“…The strong interaction between phosphate and zirconia discussed above has been used to great advantage in some specific applications. Researchers have demonstrated that this strong interaction can be used to selectively enrich phosphate-containing peptides (that is, phosphopeptides) from mixtures with other peptides (5). The peptide mixture is loaded onto a zirconia-based extraction material, followed by washing away peptides that do not contain phosphate, leaving only phosphopeptides adsorbed to the material.…”

“…Undersampling refers to the loss of 1 D resolution when the sampling frequency is insufficient to retain the quality of separation offered by the first dimension. Current consensus is that each 1 D peak should be analyzed three to four times in the 2 D to minimize the loss of 1 D resolution (5). Although this requires ultrafast 2 D analyses, it is attainable through ultrahigh-pressure LC (UHPLC) instrumentation, whereby second dimension cycle times as low as ~15-20 s can be applied.…”

“…It also has the lowest grade for robustness, because it is easily contaminated, even by the room air. ECD was reviewed in a recent column, including discussion that many originally felt that it would not be a useful detector because it is so easily contaminated (5). Users should ensure that the carrier and makeup gases are of the highest purity and extremely dry.…”
