Research Article Agronomic performance of plantain genotypes and genetic variability using Ward-MLM algorithm

Abstract: Plantains in Brazil are produced from the `Terra Maranhão', 'Terrinha' and 'D´Angola' cultivars, which are all susceptible to black Sigatoka, weevils and nematodes. Therefore, the development of resistant plantain cultivars with agronomic characteristics aligned with market demands is the most efficient way to overcome these barriers regarding fruit production. The objectives of this work were to evaluate plantain cultivars for agronomic and physicochemical characteristics, and to estimate their genetic variab… Show more

“…The study was conducted in the experimental field located in the municipality of Cruz das Almas, in the state of Bahia, Brazil (12º40'19"S, 39º06'22'W', at 220 m above sea level), between October 2013 and December 2015. The climate is classified as Aw to Am, tropical hot and humid, according to Köppen's classification, with an average annual temperature of 24.5°C, relative humidity of 80%, and rainfall of 1,250 mm (Gonçalves et al, 2018 The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three experimental replicates, corresponding to the fruits of three different plants.…”

“…In Brazil, plantains, known as "banana-daterra", differ from dessert bananas due to their larger and starchier fruits that are generally palatable only after cooking (Daniells, 2003). Although plantains are important in the country, only three varieties are available to farmers: Terra Maranhão, Terrinha, and D'Angola (Gonçalves et al, 2018).…”

“…The increase in pseudostem diameter could indicate a higher cellular activity, which implies increases in dry mass, higher demand for nutrients, and a higher meristematic activity (Sánchez and Mira, 2013). In Musa sp., a large pseudostem diameter correlates with a higher plant resistance to breakage by wind and reflects a plant's ability to sustain the bunch (Gonçalves et al, 2018), as well as correlates with a higher storage capacity in the pseudostem for water and carbohydrates (Sánchez and Mira, 2013;Shivashankar et al, 2016).…”
