Research of ABS and PLA Materials in the Process of Fused Deposition Modeling Method

Abstract: This article focused on comparing of the properties of the two most used materials, Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) and Polylactic Acid (PLA), in the Rapid Prototyping (RP) process using the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method. The thin-walled components were manufactured by Zortrax M200 and DeeGreen 3D printer. Print settings and printer parameters are also mentioned in the article. The printed models were 3D digitized using the GOM ATOS Triple Scan II optical 3D scanner. Main section is focused on t… Show more

“…Ideal parameter setting was obtained by grey relational analysis. Milde et al (2017) compared the shrinkage in X, Y and Z directions for a part made of ABS and PLA material. By scanning the components, more shrinkage was observed in ABS parts than PLA.…”

“…ABS filaments (Shenzhen ESUN Industrial Co., Ltd., Shenzhen, China) were used in the ME type AM. This material was selected because it has higher thermal shrinkage than other thermoplastic filaments such as polylactic acid (PLA) [37]. The density, glass transition temperature, and thermal expansion coefficient of this material were 1.04 g/cm 3 , 107.8 • C, and 88.2 × 10 −6 / • C, respectively.…”

“…Comparing both sets of curves one can affirm that PLA with an elastic equivalent modulus of elasticity of 1400 [MPa] is tougher than ABS, with a corresponding one of 1100 [MPa]. [ 3 ] Regarding the Poisson's ratios, the values were determined experimentally through the digital image correlation technique being equal to ν = 0.34 for PLA and 0.31 for ABS. The digital image correlation technique is based on the analysis of the shape and dimensions of an object by assigning a size and Cartesian coordinates system through the pixels in an image, as one can see in Figure .…”
