To maximize profits without sacrificing quality, the concept of sustainable construction must be adopted across a project’s whole lifespan. Although adopting the idea of passive design in developing countries is incomplete, these studies have focused on the reasons for doing so. In contrast, there is limited evidence to completely analyze the influence of integrating passive design on the project sustainable success (PSS) of projects throughout their existence. This study focuses on the hurdles to passive design adoption in Pakistani building projects. It evaluates the impact of overcoming passive design (PD) adoption barriers on project sustainability success (PSS) during the duration of the project. Therefore, a more comprehensive literature assessment is required for conceptual model construction. Using a survey assessment instrument, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was constructed (i.e., a questionnaire). A total of 156 construction experts in Pakistan provided information. The result of the model demonstrated that the elimination of PD implementation obstacles had a moderate to high impact on PSS throughout the building structure’s lifetime. These results provide the foundation for legislation in a number of Asian nations about the efficient completion of projects via the removal of obstacles for the use of passive design. Similarly, the adoption of passive design will increase the success of the construction project.

In order to solve the problems such as difficulty in implementing design standards, lack of efficient collaborative system, and lack of effective control over printing and digital signatures.We built a private cloud-based design collaboration management platform. It combines the actual needs of designers and integrates design standards, process management and project management. It achieves multi-disciplinary cooperative design, promotes standardization of drawings, digitalizes process information, and enables real-time synchronization and data sharing, thus further improves design quality and management level.

Energy-Saving Design Strategies of Zero-Energy Solar Buildings—A Case Study of the Third Solar Decathlon China

Solar Decathlon is a multi-disciplinary international competition that integrates energy-saving design strategies to design, build and operate zero-energy solar houses. This study focused on the 15 entries in the third Solar Decathlon China. It summarized their energy-saving design strategies into strategies of architectural design, equipment management, energy acquisition and intelligent regulation, and extracted a total of 22 key design elements. Based on the scoring results of the competition, this study analyzed the application of different design strategies with qualitative analysis; through quantitative analysis, 22 design elements were associated with the score, and the impact of different strategies on the score was comprehensively analyzed. As revealed in the data, design concept, functional structure and application type of renewable energy are significantly correlated with and have a great impact on the score; in contrast, building area and thermal buffer space are not significantly correlated with the score. On the basis of data analysis, this study provides a quantitative decision basis for the energy-saving design strategy of zero-energy buildings, and establishes an empirical model for the design of zero-energy solar buildings in Zhangbei County, Zhangjiakou City. This paper is helpful for the design practice and application of subsequent studies on ZEBs.
