Research on Damage Properties of Apples Based on Static Compression Combined with the Finite Element Method

Abstract: Apples are easily damaged during transportation due to extrusion and collision, resulting in structural damage and deterioration. To better understand apples’ mechanical–structural damage behavior, a texture analyzer platform combined with in situ observation was established. The effects of extrusion distance, speed, working temperature, and typical kinds of apple were considered for damage mechanisms. Apple damage was analyzed via the finite element method (FEM). The results indicated that the apple extrusion… Show more

“…In this paper, the relationship between maturity, deformation and damage area of Korla fragrant pears is explored. The damage area increases with the increase in maturity and deformation, which is consistent with the research results of Mazhar, M et al [26], Liu et al [27], and Yu et al [17]. This is because the increase in maturity causes the decrease in fruit hardness [28], thus the fruit becomes softer, the resistance to extrusion load is weakened and the degree of damage rises.…”

“…The PLA board is 3D printed and fixed with jackscrews, which are also used to ensure that the distance between the rollers is fixed during the rotation, and the PLA board is fixed to the transparent PMMA plate by hot melt adhesive, as shown in Figure 4c. The used TPU95A roller material has some elasticity to better protect the apple from damage during the rotation [32]. The 42 stepper motor is used to rotate the roller.…”

“…Apart from measurement methods, an alternative approach is to estimate stresses using finite element (FE) analysis, which provides a user-friendly format for interpreting bruise formation in fruits. Several studies have reported on the analysis of static and dynamic contact pressure on fruits with the FE method [4,19,[43][44][45][46][47]. Nonetheless, there are some limitations to FE in predicting bruise area without data support and guidance from contact pressure measurements.…”
