Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the level of effectiveness of the anti-fraud technologies employed by the South African banking industry for cyberfraud mitigation. Design/methodology/approach This research employed a qualitative research design involving a purposive sampling method. Primary data was collected from the key organisational staff across the 17 licensed commercial banks in South Africa via the use of structured questionnaires. In particular, these were experts involved in combating fraud and taking managerial decisions regarding the use of anti-fraud technologies for cyberfraud mitigation. Non-parametric statistical analyses were carried out from the responses obtained. Findings The results obtained indicated that the combination of internal and external anti-fraud technologies such as filtering software, firewalls, encryption, continuous auditing, discovery sampling, virus protection, financial ratios, digital analysis and data mining may have a positive effect on cyberfraud mitigation. These technologies are employed mostly to ensure effective internal control systems capable of minimising cyberfraud. In addition, the anti-fraud technologies employed in the South African banking industry may also be effective in the mitigation of cyberfraud, although significant cases of cyberattacks were reported by the respondents. Practical implications The study recommends investment in more digital and emerging technologies and the development of human capacities to effectively deploy them in the combat against cybercrime. Originality/value The novelty of this study lies in the identification of the type of anti-fraud technologies/software employed by the South African banking industry and their level of effectiveness or success rate.

The Internet-of-Things (IoT) triggers data protection questions and new types of cyber risks. Cyber risk regulations for the IoT, however, are still in their infancy. This is concerning, because companies integrating IoT devices and services need to perform a self-assessment of its IoT cyber security posture. At present, there are no self-assessment methods for quantifying IoT cyber risk posture. It is considered that IoT represent a complex system with too many uncontrollable risk states for quantitative risk assessment. To enable quantitative risk assessment of uncontrollable risk states in complex and coupled IoT systems, a new epistemological equation is designed and tested though comparative and empirical analysis. The comparative analysis is conducted on national digital strategies, followed by an empirical analysis of cyber risk assessment approaches. The results from the analysis present the current and a target state for IoT systems, followed by a transformation roadmap, describing how IoT systems can achieve the target state with a new epistemological analysis model. The new epistemological analysis approach enables the assessment of uncontrollable risk states in complex IoT systems—which begin to resemble artificial intelligence—and can be used for a quantitative self-assessment of IoT cyber risk posture.

In response to cross-border cybercrime, investigative organs have adopted cross-border criminal forensic measures such as online public extraction, remote electronic data inspection and real-time monitoring, which may violate the principles of data sovereignty and judicial assistance. While promoting the establishment of a cross-border cooperation mechanism, China should establish a new cross-border electronic evidence criminal forensics model by promoting the procedural justification of cross-border search and monitoring measures. To better regulate cross-border criminal forensics activities, it is necessary to improve the cross-border cybercrime procuratorial organs system to intervene in advance and guide investigations.
