Research on Lemongrass Oil Extraction Technology (Hydrodistillation, Microwave-Assisted Hydrodistillation)

Abstract: Microwave-assisted hydro-distillation (MAHD) is preferred to traditional extraction methods due to shorter extraction time, the inability of volatile components to be damaged or decomposed which in turn improve the efficiency and quality of essential oils. In this research, we investigated the parameters that affect the extraction of lemongrass oil process by MAHD method and compare with those of hydro-distillation (HD) method. Four parameters were identified which are: raw material size, raw material to water… Show more

“…Signi cant differences may, however, be observed in contents of major components (geranial, neral, myrcene) [Desai & Parikh, 2015]. The yields of MAHD and HD methods reported by Tran et al [2019] were 0.35% and 0.2%, respectively, the MAHD method produced oil with 93.28% while HD 83.85% with citral content.…”

“…It is a mixture of soluble organic substances with a characteristic odor. Essential oils are widely used in the cosmetic industry, especially in the production of various perfumes [4], shower gels, hair creams, shampoos [5], as a component of disinfectants in pharmaceuticals [6], and as pesticides in the field of insecticides from natural substances [7][8]. Phenolic constituents, which are present in essential oils, are known to have antibacterial activity, and some are generally recognized as safe substances [9][10][11].…”

“…The quality of OEO was evaluated based on the analytical method GC-MS. Among the extraction methods of essential oils, the hydrodistillation method has been widely used, especially for commercial production, because of its low cost, ease of operation, and efficient recovery stable, the high-quality essential oil obtained [4,[20][21].…”

“…Nevertheless, irradiation would probably affect the loss of BCP observed in the current study, owing to the volatileness and heat-sensitive characteristic of the terpene [39][40]. Other factors such as irrigation [41], crushing [42], drying process and storage [43], as well as the characteristics of plant matrix that is highly influenced by geographical and ecological situation [44], has also been reported to significantly influence the chemical constituents of essential oils.…”
