Research on Microscopic Grain-Workpiece Interaction in Grinding through Micro-Cutting Simulation, Part 1: Mechanism Study

Abstract: Grinding is regarded as a special multiple edge cutting process, which can be decomposed into grain-workpiece interface, chip-workpiece/bond interface, and bond-workpiece interface at microscopic level. The grain-workpiece interface, which resembles a micro-cutting process, directly modifies the workpiece surface and dominates all the output measures of a grinding process. Therefore, the study of the grain-workpiece interaction through micro-cutting analysis becomes necessary. As the emergence of the packaged … Show more

“…The finite element simulation can be employed to solve implicit problems, and was widely applied to the fields of structural strength, fluid analysis, and metal cutting. Therefore, this paper applied the AdvantEdge (a type of finite element analysis product [15][16][17][18] ) to calculate the precise value of force acting on steel wire, and verify the values of force using test rig (Figure 5) constructed in the lab.…”

“…Different sets of simulations have been conducted from conventional grinding to high speed grinding, with depth of cut ranging from 0.006mm to 0.12mm, as shown in Table 1. The material constitutive model and the damage model have been discussed in [12].…”

“…Third Wave AdvantEdge TM for single grain cutting simulation had been testified through comparing the simulation results and experimental values in our former research [7,8]. In this study, single grain cutting simulations of AISI D2 steel with a wide range of cutting parameters have been carried out to obtain a quantitative analysis of grinding processes.…”
