Application of Computational Intelligence in Describing Dust Emissions in Different Soil Tillage Applications in Middle Anatolia

Soil degradation is an increasing problem in Turkey, especially in the Middle Anatolia region where the annual precipitation is approximately 300 mm, resulting from conventional farming methods. To address this issue, the artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used, as they are flexible mathematical tools that capture data. This study aims to investigate the relationships between dust emission (PM10) and the mean weight diameter, shear stress, and stubble amount of the soil, which were measured in eight different tillage practices (conventional tillage, six types of reduced tillage, and direct seeding). The results show that the mean weight diameter, shear stress, and stubble amount of the soil varied between 4.89 and 14.17 mm, 0.40–1.23 N·cm−2, and 30.5–158 g·m−2, respectively, depending on the type of tillage works. Additionally, dust emissions generated during different tillage applications ranged from 27.73 to 153.45 mg·m−3. The horizontal shaft rototiller produced the highest dust emission, approximately 150% higher than those of disc harrow and winged chisel plows. The impact of tillage practices on dust emission was statistically significant (p < 0.01). A sophisticated 3-(7-7)-1 ANNs model using a backpropagation learning algorithm was developed to predict the concentration of dust, which outperformed the traditional statistical models. The model was based on the values of mean weight diameter, shear stress, and stubble amount of the soil after tillage. The best result was obtained from the ANN model among the polynomial and ANN models. In the ANN model, the coefficient of determination, root mean square error, and mean error were found to be 0.98, 6.70, and 6.11%, respectively. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of ANNs in predicting the levels of dust concentration based on soil tillage data, and it highlighted the importance of adopting alternative tillage practices to reduce soil degradation and dust emissions.

Mechanical Properties and Construction of Constitutive Model for Compression and Stress Relaxation of Cattle Manure

In order to study the mechanical properties of compression and stress relaxation of manure under drainage conditions, the experiment was carried out with cattle manure as the object, and the constitutive models were improved to describe the stress-strain curves of compression and stress relaxation. The defined constitutive model was determined by parameter identification, and the influence laws of moisture content and filling mass on the compression and relaxation process were investigated. The results show that the improved Nishihara model and the five-component generalized Maxwell model can better describe the compression and stress relaxation properties of cattle manure, and the coefficients of determination of the parameters of the fitted intrinsic model are all greater than 0.9, with high fitting accuracy. The compression process was divided into three stages: exhaust, drainage, and viscoelastic-plastic deformation. The stress decay rate tended to change quickly and then slowly, and there was a negative correlation between the compressed mass, moisture content, and stress decay rate. Duncan's mean comparisons revealed that the differences in elastic modulus between different moisture content / compressed mass groups in the parameters of the cattle manure compression principal model were all significant (P<0.05). The differences in elastic modulus and coefficient of viscous attenuation between different moisture content groups in the parameters of the stress relaxation model were all significant. The study's results can provide the theoretical basis for the study and simulation of CM's compression and dewatering mechanism and provide support for the solid-liquid separator for livestock and poultry manure.

This article presents the results obtained through experimental research carried out with a machine for shredding woody plant residues (twigs, vine ropes), residues obtained from dry or green cuttings, in fruit or wine plantations. The obtained shredding is intended for utilization in the form of compost or biofuel (pellet type). The machine was designed and made by a group of researchers from INMA Bucharest, with the aim of developing the machine system made available to farmers, for mechanized work in small and medium-sized fruit plantations. The sizes of the fractions of the wood fragments resulting from the chopping process, their humidity and volumetric weight were determined. Using as raw material greener or drier branches, with dimensions between 10-45 mm, with an adjustment of the chopping drum at an average speed of 1400 rpm and an average speed of the conveyor chain of 0.425 m/s, wood chips with different sizes between 4 and 16 mm were obtained, the proportions varying from 13% to 16%. The average working capacity of the equipment was approx. 14.2 mc/h. Research will continue to determine the energy indices of the machine designed and made at INMA Bucharest, and the results will be presented in another article.
