Research protocol for the validation of a new portable technology for real-time continuous monitoring of Early Warning Score (EWS) in hospital practice and for an early-stage multistakeholder assessment

Abstract: IntroductionThe real-time continuous monitoring of vital parameters in patients affected by multiple chronic conditions and/or COVID-19 can lead to several benefits to the Italian National Healthcare System (IT-NHS). The UBiquitous Integrated CARE (UBICARE) technology is a novel health digital platform at the validation stage in hospital setting. UBICARE might support the urgent need for digitalisation and early intervention, as well as minimise the face-to-face delivery of care in both hospital and community-… Show more

“…Even though in recent years there has been an increasing understanding of the need to seek a broader approach by considering additional parameters of bene t to the traditional ones (i.e., clinical and/or economic), only few publications assessed organizational requirements and/or human factors, which were reduced to usability and/or acceptability excluding a considerable contribution to the assessment in terms of human e cacy and effectiveness (19,(147)(148)(149)(150).…”

“…Historically, the object of HTA has been restricted to pharmaceuticals, rather than MDs, and evidence on clinical e cacy/effectiveness (i.e., can it work/does it work) and/or cost-effectiveness (i.e., is it worth it) has formed a key part of the formal assessment, taking over other relevant evidence types (e.g., human factor) when assessing the impact of a healthcare innovation (1,19,20). In terms of evidence generation, HTA has been traditionally based on positive scienti c methods, such as systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which have been preferred due to their lower risk of bias by design compared to real-world studies (21).…”

“…The final aim of this method is to select the most promising biomedical technologies, which can reach patients and society in a timelier fashion. HTA is the systematic assessment of the costs and multidimensional consequences of a medical technology [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Recently, there has been an increasing attention to achieve a broader view in HTA by enlarging the scope of analysis and including social, ethical, safety-related or environmental parameters of benefit [ 25 , 28 ].…”

“…Exploring multifactorial determinants of technology acceptance by nurses and other professionals is strategic for management to support adoption within a health organization through tailored strategies leading to organizational flexibility (Manetti et al, 2017(Manetti et al, , 2020. A qualitative research design was employed to generate rich information allowing for an in-depth understanding of nurses' and other professionals' determinants, motivations, and emotional perceptions concerning technology adoption and organizational change.…”
