Research trends of platelet-rich plasma therapy on knee osteoarthritis from 2011 to 2021: A review

Abstract: Background: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been widely used to alleviate osteoarthritis of the knee, and research results are abundant. However, there are no bibliometric reports in publications in this field. Therefore, the current status of PRP for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee from 2011 to 2021 was analyzed using Citespace 6.1.R2 software. “…It worth noting that a recent study also explored a similar reorientation; however, our approach differs in several respects . [37] Firstly, we conducted a comprehensive literature search to trace the origins of PRP application in KOA, finding that it was first proposed in 2008. We chose to analyze nearly 15 years of research (from 2008 to 2022) to encompass the entire spectrum of studies and capture any evolving trends.…”

“…The autologous fluid, which is obtained by centrifuging whole blood, is a highly concentrated cocktail of inflammatory mediators and growth factors capable of reducing inflammatory distress and stimulating cell proliferation and cartilaginous matrix production [16]. Between 2011 and 2021, 867 studies on the topic of PRP were published, with an upward trend over the years [23].…”

“…Knee OA treatments include surgical options like Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) and non-surgical therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or hyaluronic acid injections [ 3 , 4 ]. However, they only offer palliative relief and do not modify the disease course.…”

“…Therefore, other non-MSC sources are also being investigated. As mentioned before, PRP is being used as a possible treatment for OA [ 4 ], thus, constituting an alternative as EV source [ 5 ].…”
