The allure of a destination often lies in the unique and authentic connections with local communities. In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 11, which advocates for sustainable cities and communities, community-based tourism (CBT) has emerged as a promising approach. Recognizing the potential of CBT, this study delves into the perceptions and acceptance of this concept among community members and rice cake vendors in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. Rice cake, bibingka in Filipino language, holds deeper significance for these vendors. It embodies their cultural heritage passed down through generations. By embracing CBT, they can transform their passion into a sustainable livelihood, not only for themselves but for their entire community and the whole tourism industry of the province. Adopting a quantitative approach, this study employs a CBT framework with a supplementing focus on community capital. Through mapping and observation of the research locale, community capital includes built, human, and political. The findings also reveal a positive correlation between the community’s perception and acceptance of CBT. This encouraging outcome signifies that the community has met the first consideration of embracing CBT-they have their eyes wide open. It is therefore recommended that consistent and inclusive programs from various stakeholders be in place to enhance the existing knowledge of the CBT concept towards strong community organization building. Future researchers may assess tourists’ experiences and satisfaction with the current offering of rice cake as a CBT product for planners’ and policymakers’ prospect program implementation.

This study sought to determine residents' perceptions of tourism development and the subsequent impacts of tourism in South Africa. Tourism's impacts on residents have been a topical issue in existing literature given that they can offer guidance for planners in terms of development trajectories. This is because tourism is widely associated with both negative and positive impacts on residents, depending on the destination's life cycle and other factors. Thus, Soweto, as South Africa's most visited township and a place where tourism is seen as a strategic tool for socioeconomic development, was selected as an ideal case study for this research. A positivist, quantitative research approach was employed in targeting residents (n=241) using a systematic random sampling method. Data was analyzed through IBM SPSS 24, and key findings revealed that, on the whole, residents are involved directly or indirectly in tourism and generally support its development. Additionally, it was found that residents have largely positive feelings towards tourism and its development in the area although nuances were there regarding tourism recently highlighting the economic gaps between the poor and the rich. The government was also criticized for failing to increase education about tourism among residents so that they could effectively benefit from it. It was also suggested that tourism compromises the authenticity of heritage and cultural activities in the area whilst also resulting in the increased prices of goods and services for locals.

Integrating Local Resident’s Perception, Attitude, and Support of Tourism Development: The Case of Super-Priority Destination Likupang

Abstract. Tourism has an impact on the growth of a country. Indonesia has five super priority destination and Likupang is the one of super priority destination of tourism located in North Minahasa. The purpose of this study is to see the relationship between local residents’ perception, attitude and support toward tourism development in Likupang. Through a quantitative survey involving 304 sample, the present study analyzes the relationship among variables using structural equation modelling (SEM) by the help of SmartPLS statistical software. The result of this study found that the local residents perceived benefits and perceived cost positively and significantly effect their attitude toward tourism development. Also, the local residents perceived benefits positively effect their support for tourism development. In contrast, the local residents perceived cost negatively effect their support for tourism development. However, these effects of perceived benefits and costs on support for tourism development turned out to be not significant. Furthermore, the local residents’ attitude toward tourism development has a positive and significant effect on their support toward tourism development. Additionally, the local residents attitude fully mediates the perceived benefit variable and support tourism development. Lastly, the local residents attitude fully mediates the perceived cost and support for tourism development. Abstrak. Pariwisata memiliki dampak terhadap pertumbuhan suatu negara. Indonesia memiliki lima destinasi super prioritas dan Likupang merupakan salah satu destinasi super prioritas pariwisata yang terletak di Minahasa Utara. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat hubungan antara persepsi, sikap dan dukungan warga setempat terhadap pengembangan pariwisata di Likupang. Melalui survei kuantitatif yang melibatkan 304 sampel, penelitian ini menganalisis hubungan antar variabel menggunakan model persamaan struktural (SEM) dengan bantuan perangkat lunak statistik SmartPLS. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa persepsi manfaat dan biaya yang dirasakan penduduk lokal berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap sikap mereka terhadap pengembangan pariwisata. Selain itu, manfaat yang dirasakan penduduk setempat berdampak positif terhadap dukungan mereka terhadap pengembangan pariwisata. Sebaliknya, penduduk setempat menganggap biaya berdampak negatif terhadap dukungan mereka terhadap pengembangan pariwisata. Namun, efek dari manfaat yang dirasakan dan biaya dukungan untuk pengembangan pariwisata ini ternyata tidak signifikan. Selanjutnya, sikap penduduk lokal terhadap pengembangan pariwisata berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap dukungan mereka terhadap pengembangan pariwisata. Selain itu, sikap warga setempat sepenuhnya memediasi variabel manfaat yang dirasakan dan mendukung pengembangan pariwisata. Terakhir, sikap penduduk setempat sepenuhnya memediasi biaya yang dirasakan dan dukungan untuk pengembangan pariwisata.
