Residues of currently used pesticides in soils and earthworms: A silent threat?

Abstract: Critical knowledge gaps about environmental fate and unintentional effects of currently used pesticides (CUPs) hamper the understanding and mitigation of their global impacts on ecological processes. We investigated the exposure of earthworms to 31 multiclass CUPs in an arable landscape in France. We highlighted the presence of at least one pesticide in all soils (n=180) and 92% of earthworms (n=155) both in treated crops and nontreated habitats (hedgerows, grasslands, and cereals under organic farming). Mixtu… Show more

“…The coating of seeds with these insecticides, proposed as a simple prophylactic solution, is furthermore contradictory to a sustainable strategy of treating crops only in case of potential damage. Finally, the persistence of many synthetic molecules poses a problem beyond the short term of their application [43].…”

“…L'enrobage des semences avec ces insecticides, proposé comme une solution prophylactique simple, est en outre contradictoire avec une stratégie raisonnée qui consiste à traiter uniquement en cas de problèmes potentiels. Enfin, la rémanence de nombreuses molécules de synthèse pose un problème au-delà du court terme de leur application [43].…”

“…In Europe, the use of chemical treatments has been rare (Supplement S3): it has long been acknowledged that insecticides may cause significant negative externalities including biodiversity loss, ground and surface water contamination (including off-field habitat contamination), impacts on non-target organisms including biocontrol agents, pollinators and earthworms, bio-amplification of toxic substances within the food web with potential effects on human and animal health and development of resistance (Pimentel 2005;Pelosi et al 2021). The severity of these impacts will depend on the specificity and toxicity levels of the substances used.…”

“…Pesticides are widely used to increase agricultural production by controlling pests, however, they have strong potential to severely contaminate agricultural soils [ 1 ]. Organophosphorus pesticides usage has been aggravated worldwide due to their high efficacy towards killing insect pests [ 2 ].…”
