Resilience and crime victimization

Abstract: What do we know about resilience in crime victimization? In this article, the authors discuss resilience defined as protective factors (e.g., personality characteristics, biological characteristics, social and cultural factors, and community characteristics); as a process of adaptation (e.g., self-enhancement, positive cognitive appraisals, coping styles, and spirituality), including an iterative perspective on resilience as a cascade of protective processes; and as positive outcomes (e.g., lack of symptoms) f… Show more

“…To allow for such a swift response, decision making may be based on the use of readily available information, such as demographic factors and exposure levels, as well as the relationships between them. This is important as not just exposure, as noted above, but demographic factors, especially gender, have been found to correlate with both GAS and PTSS in epidemiological studies as well as post-stressor studies (Daig, Herschbach, Lehmann, Knoll, & Decker, 2009; Dutton & Greene, 2010; Grant et al, 2009; Margruder et al, 2004). The salience of using such available information is underscored as, currently, more labor-intensive early indicators (e.g., diagnosis of acute stress disorder, biomarkers, assessment of self-efficacy) show only partial promise in predicting outcome (Bryant, 2007; Ritchie, Watson, & Friedman, 2007).…”

“…It is important that research on the psychological impact of trauma move beyond the identification of risk factors to identify factors, particularly modifiable ones, contributing to resilient outcomes (Bonanno & Mancini, 2012;Dutton, 2010). Negative mood regulation expectancies (NMRE) is one such construct.…”

“…Dauguma mokslininkų sutaria, kad ypatingą svarbą turi vidiniai atsparumo veiksniai, kurie turi lemiamą įtaką atsparumui traumai. Vis dėlto tyrėjai išskiria skirtingus vidinius atsparumo traumai veiksnius (Bonanno, Brewin, Kaniasty, LaGreca, 2010;Ong, Bergeman, Chow, 2010;Skodol, 2010;Masten, O'Dougherty-Wright, 2010;Dutton, Greene, 2010;Pargament, Cummings, 2010, Ziegler-Hill, 2011. Nuodugnesnė atsparumo psichologinei traumai vidinių veiksnių sampratos ir empirinių tyrimų analizė gali padėti efektyviau transformuoti teorines žinias į praktinius metodus, tokius kaip psichologinio atsparumo traumai intervencinių ir prevencinių programų kūrimas.…”

“…Įvairūs mokslininkai išskiria skirtingus vidinius atsparumo traumai veiksnius, tokius kaip kontrolės lokusas, ego atsparumas, saviveiksmingumas, savigarba, psichologinė ištvermė, emocinė savireguliacija, viltis, optimizmas, dvasingumas, kultūrinis tapatumas (Bonanno, Brewin, Kaniasty, LaGreca, 2010;Ong, Bergeman, Chow, 2010;Skodol, 2010;Masten, Wright, 2010;Hoge, Austin, Pollack, 2007;Dutton, Greene, 2010;Pargament, Cummings, 2010).…”
