Resilience Assessment of Urban Complex Giant Systems in Hubei Section of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area Based on Multi-Source Data

Abstract: Due to a lack of guidance in urban systems thinking, China’s rapid urbanization has intensified the interactions and coercive effects between the various urban space subsystems. As a result, “urban diseases” such as environmental pollution, frequent earthquakes, and unbalanced urban–rural development have spread. As a complex giant system, the exploration of urban resilience enhancement is critical to ensuring the joint spatial development of cities and towns. Based on the PSR model, this study screens 38 indi… Show more

“…The results show that Wuhan City has shown a distinct "urban core-urban fringe-rural hinterland" layered structure in its development over the past 20 years; (2) The geographic spatial structure of Wuhan City has evolved in a spreading circle pattern. In 2000, the area of the urban fringe was 474.351 km 2 ; in 2010, it expanded to 864.82 km 2 , and by 2020, it had increased further to 1220.104 km 2 . In contrast, the area of rural hinterland decreased from 7883.823 km 2 in 2000 to 6617.068 km 2 in 2020.…”

“…The urban fringe continuously expanded outward and spread to the rural hinterland. The area of rural hinterland decreased from 7853.823 km 2 to 7232.925 km 2 , with an average annual dynamic degree of 0.791%. Under the rapid development of…”

“…In order to control and develop the Yangtze River basin, the construction of the Three Gorges Water Conservancy Project began in December 1994. Around October 2008, the offshore power station unit was put into operation, and the reservoir water level was 175 m [47]. In January 2010, the Three Gorges Project was completed and accepted after 16 years.…”

“…It is a critical hurdle in ensuring the Yangtze River Basin's ecological security. It is also an essential environmental function area [29,30] on the Yangtze River Economic Belt, which is strategically vital. Because the TGRA is a geographical area formed by the Three Gorges Project, its distinct formation method, development pattern, geographical environment, and climatic conditions have resulted in a slew of urban diseases during the urbanization process, including unbalanced urban-rural development, insufficient infrastructure construction, and severe soil erosion [31].…”
