In the pelvis, anatomic complexity and difficulty in visualization and access make surgery a formidable task. Surgeons are prone to work-related musculoskeletal injuries from the frequently poor design and flow of their work environment. This is exacerbated by the strain of surgery in the pelvis. These injuries can result in alterations to a surgeons practice, inadvertent patient injury, and even early retirement. Human factors examines the relationships between the surgeon, their instruments and their environment. By bridging physiology, psychology, and ergonomics, human factors allows a better understanding of some of the challenges posed by pelvic surgery. The operative approach involved (open, laparoscopic, robotic, or perineal) plays an important role in the relevant human factors. Improved understanding of ergonomics can mitigate these risks to surgeons. Other human factors approaches such as standardization, use of checklists, and employing resiliency efforts can all improve patient safety in the operating theatre.

Objetivo: discutir as evidências científicas sobre as causas de cancelamento em cirurgia ambulatorial. Método: trata-se de uma revisão integrativa com busca nas bases de dados eletrônicas Medline, Embase, Lilacs, Cinahl, Web of Science e Scopus, a partir dos termos controlados Ambulatory Surgical Procedures, Ambulatory Surgery, Suspension e termos livres sinônimos. Resultados: selecionaram-se 13 estudos. O país com menor taxa de cancelamento cirúrgico ambulatorial foi os Estados Unidos com 0,5%, e o maior, a Nigéria com 25,40%. Foram encontradas 53 causas de cancelamento em cirurgia ambulatorial, das quais agrupou-se em três categorias: fatores do paciente, clínicos e institucionais. Conclusão: Evidencia-se que as causas de cancelamento cirúrgico ambulatorial foram diversas e comuns nas instituições, sendo o absenteísmo do paciente no dia do procedimento agendado a causa mais frequente, demonstrando que estratégias assistenciais e de gestão precisam ser realizadas.ABSTRACTObjective: to discuss the scientific evidence on the causes of cancellation in outpatient surgery. The fifty-three causes of outpatient surgery cancellation found were grouped into three categories: patient, clinical, and institutional factors. Conclusion: the causes of outpatient surgical cancellation were found to be diverse and common in institutions, the most frequent cause being patient absence on the day of the scheduled procedure, demonstrating that care and management strategies need to be developed and applied.RESUMENObjetivo: discutir la evidencia científica sobre las causas de cancelación en cirugía ambulatoria. Scheduling and attendance management present huge challenges for hospitals, and the importance of both has become more critical as resource limitations and overwhelmingly uncertain demand are becoming more evident, especially during COVID-19. Important variables and factors need to be considered. When managers address this problem, they either use a manual approach or invest in expensive commercial tools. We propose a simple and flexible system that requires no extra investment. This system was developed using Ding Talk, Microsoft Excel and Visual C#. Ding Talk was used to collect vacation applications and clock information. A VBA-based Microsoft Excel program was developed to schedule shifts. A Windows Forms Application based on Visual C# was developed to complete the workload and attendance statistics. We focused on the design and implementation of the module of schedule generation and attendance management. Using the practical data of the Ultrasound Department, we compared the time spent on scheduling and attendance before and after the system was established. The results demonstrate that the system is feasible and efficient. Its high flexibility enables managers to quickly modify the schedule and attendance statistics to achieve dynamic management when dealing with inevitable demand changes during COVID-19.
