Resilience with Mixed Agricultural and Urban Land Uses in Tokyo, Japan

Abstract: Urban agriculture can enhance the resilience of neighborhoods by providing fresh food in times of natural disasters; however, there is little empirical evidence to support this. Therefore, this study proposes a methodology to identify patterns of agricultural production in urban areas by quantifying self-sufficiency rates in vegetable weight and key nutrients. A spatial grid cell analysis using a geographic information system (GIS) identifies the current and potential self-sufficiency of each land use pattern … Show more

“…One of two coders coded the document using a similar codebook (Peterson et al, 2020). The stages of building a research question (NPF), identifying the research locus, the level of analysis distinguished from the unit of analysis, specifying the research model, coding visual narrative data, accessing narrative data, analyzing narrative data (Sioen et al, 2018). The research steps in the NPF tradition described above illustrate a mixed tradition between positivistic and postpositivist (Salahudin et al, 2020).…”

“…Such techniques not only helps in increasing the production of the country but also helps in making congenial and ecofriendly environment as such gardens on the roofs act like green curtain which can help to escape from harsh climatic conditions. Such practices are significant toward sustainability (Bruno et al 2018). Argentina, USA, South Korea, Netherland, Ghana and other countries have already implemented this approach for sustainable development.…”

“…Future research can specifically focus on these questions in selected metropolitan areas. Instead of weight-based analysis, future research can also look further into the issue of nutrition self-sufficiency, which responds more directly to public health [27,28]. Next, our study did not consider the influences of the food supply chains [11], the change of diets [30], or the expansion of metropolitan areas.…”

“…A growing number of studies has conducted assessments of food supply-demand balance [23,24] or food self-sufficiency capacity [21,22,25,26] in metropolitan areas across broad food categories (grains, vegetables, fruit, meat, etc.). Another motive for research on food self-sufficiency is rooted in the concern for food supply in natural disasters or extreme weather events when distant food supply is impossible, and the research interest is specifically on nutritional self-sufficiency with a focus on fresh vegetables and fruit [27,28].…”
